The Miami Dolphins are making a quarterback change ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.
As per Ian Rapoport on X, the Dolphins are making rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers the backup quarterback to Tua Tagovailoa on Sunday. The Dolphins drafted Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft, at pick No. 231.
The backup position was previously held by Zach Wilson all season, who made his one and only appearance for the team in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts. It’s unclear whether or not Wilson is currently dealing with an injury, or if the decision to relegate Wilson off the active roster is entirely a football one. However, it’s worth nothing that Wilson is listed as “OUT” on ESPN’s most recent depth chart for the Miami Dolphins.
Ewers, who was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school, played his college ball at Ohio State and University of Texas, starting three consecutive seasons for the latter. He threw for 9, 128 yards, 68 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions across 37 games in college football.
While starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been good for the Dolphins this season (at least, on paper), this change may set the stage for Ewers eventually see some snaps this season. The Dolphins seem to be getting worse each week, so throwing the rookie out there and seeing what you have, may not be the worst idea in the world.
