Mike McDaniel calls Dolphins Trade Rumors “Baseless” in Latest Press Conference

The Miami Dolphins are currently 1-5, and with the future of the current regime in jeopardy, many expect the team to be sellers at this year’s NFL trade deadline.

Rumors have already started to swirl surrounding several players, including pass-rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, and some have even suggested the team could move some of their promising young offensive playmakers — like Jaylen Waddle and De’Von Achane — as well.

That may still happen.

But for now, Miami’s head coach is claiming there is no credibility to those rumors, calling them “baseless” at his Friday afternoon press conference.

“For the record, all rumors about Miami Dolphins players are ‘baseless, currently.” McDaniel continued, “It’s unfortunate….I personally…. this time of the year kinda bothers me for the sake of an individual player that’s having to answer questions about his long-term journey or potential, or has where he’s playing questioned on rumors and thoughts of other people.

Earlier in the week, Phillips was asked about his thoughts on trade rumors and whether or not he’d like to stay in Miami long-term.

“I love this team,” he said. “I’ve dedicated a lot of emotions to this organization. Ideally, I would [stay] but I’ve got to do my job…. Whether it’s the Dolphins keep me or another team getting me, that’s completely out of my control. It’s not something I’m worrying about… I can’t do anything about that.”

Rumors emerged from various sources this week, including New York Giants beat writer Connor Hughes at SNY, Denver Broncos insider Ben Allbright, and even the legendary Pretty Rickey, who got involved before leaving social media (Classic Rickey).

As always, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

I’m sure teams have called to inquire about Waddle and Achane, and if Miami were smart, they would’ve hung up the phone immediately. Phillips and Chubb are probably more likely to be moved, but even still, is that what’s best for the team long-term? And better yet, who is the one making the long-term decisions of this franchise?

Surely, Stephen Ross isn’t going to let CHRIS GRIER trade away valuable assets like Achane and Waddle, right? RIGHT?!?!

No one truly knows what Ross is thinking, but one thing is sure: if the Dolphins travel to Cleveland to lay an egg vs. the Browns — despite the obscene weather — it may be time for the first of many dominoes to fall. But I have to ask, is trading away star players for less-than-market value the right way to go about things — especially if Grier is still in charge?

“That’s gonna be a no from me, dawg” – Randy Jackson
