Fans have been smiling as their Indianapolis Colts find themselves in first place in the AFC six weeks into the season. There have been easy wins, nail bitters, disappointments, and head scratchers. All of that has added up to the best overall record and a great place to be a third of the way through the season. Things are starting to pick up with some major games heading into the bye however that will shape things to come.
Road games against the Chargers and Steelers are by far the toughest and best tests to prove whether the Colts are for real. They couldn’t quite pass the first test against the Rams, but that was due to self inflicted wounds versus being overmatched. The Colts should have had that game so getting another chance in L.A. against the Chargers should be welcomed. It has been an up and down season for the Chargers, but a win there would be a great resume boost. The Steelers on the road will be tough as well, especially as a team the Colts have historically struggled with. While the Steelers don’t look invincible, they have only lost once this year, proving they are a threat.
Not to overlook the Titans in this group of games but they appear to be the only respite. They are a bad team that just fired their coach and are the only home game before the break. Technically, the Berlin game against the Falcons is at “home”, but we know that means nothing. Speaking of the Falcons, they have been playing some pretty good ball. They have a confusing loss against the Panthers but wins against the Vikings, Commanders, and Bills show they are no slouch. It won’t be a cake walk for the Colts by any means in Germany.
The schedule to this point has been soft, and the Colts have taken full advantage. There are some tough games after the bye as well, but the lead up could prove crucial. Holding onto the number one overall seed is the thing of dreams right now, but it’s most likely just that. To have a shot at it though and keep the playoff dreams alive, a 2-2 split is a must while 3-1 would be extremely satisfying. Going into the bye potentially 8-2 would be something most fans couldn’t have imagined at season’s start.
