Six weeks into the 2025 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins are a complete mess from top to bottom. The team sits at 1-5, and many are pointing fingers at head coach Mike McDaniel.
McDaniel was hired in 2022, and and is currently in his fourth season as head coach of the Dolphins. The team is yet to win a win a playoff game under his tutelage, let alone a division title. Though he held a record of 28- 22 in his first 50 NFL games as head coach, he is now 29-28, just two losses away from falling below .500.
Reports indicate that McDaniel has also lost the locker room, with veteran players “skipping meetings” and showing up late.
As such, many have asked for his firing, with some fans going as far as to fly a banner over Hard Rock Stadium calling for his job.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news to those individuals responsible for the banner, but it looks like McDaniel’s job is safe—for now.
As per NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is not looking to move off McDaniel “anytime soon”.
This may come as a surprise to some, with some fans and media members alike asking for McDaniel’s exit as early as 2024, let alone 2025. But, it’s worth nothing that McDaniel signed an extension with the team in 2024, fresh off the back of an 11-6 season in which the Dolphins were fun, but failed to win the division or win a playoff game.
Ultimately, the decision to keep or fire McDaniel may actually fall on the shoulders of general manager Chris Grier, who Ross seems to trust. Grier has been general manager of the Dolphins since 2016, and seemingly faces no threat of losing his job, despite overseeing three different rebuilds across three different coaches.
Nonetheless, there doesn’t seem to be any changes coming anytime soon. But hey, ask me again next week.
