The Bengals lost their fourth straight game on Sunday. This time, they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers 27-18. The defense had surrendered just 10 points through the first half. They surrendered 17 points alone in the fourth quarter.
Barrett Carter played 100% of the snaps on the defensive side of the ball for Cincinnati this week. The rookie had some ups and downs throughout the game.
He flashed some of his athleticism by being active in the run game. He made a few nice run stops early on.
Carter had his share of struggles for the defense as the game went on. He missed some tackles out in space. Also, he didn’t recognize Josh Jacobs out of the backfield. That play led to the Packers’ first touchdown of the game. Demetrius Knight Jr. had just as many struggles during the second half at linebacker.
The star for the defense on the day was without a doubt Juan Drago “DJ” Turner. He was credited with five passes defensed. One of which led to a Bengals interception by Geno Stone.
Joseph Ossai is another player who I thought flashed quite a few times. He made some impressive plays that helped get the Bengals off the field. He is also the ultimate hype man for when his teammates make a big play, as evidenced by his reaction to the Geno Stone hit.
This was the worst game I have ever seen from Jordan Battle. He missed several tackles. He often plays too high or takes poor angles in pursuit. The Bengals need better play out of him if they are going to have a chance to beat Pittsburgh this week.
Battle was also part of giving up the reception late in the game that could have given the Bengals a chance to get the offense back on the field. They were only down 24-18 at that time. Battle was unable to stay with Matthew Golden in coverage after it appeared Cam Taylor-Britt passed him off to him.
The Packers ultimately kicked a field goal and won the game by nine.
Another week where only one of the offense or defense can look competent at a time. Facing the Pittsburgh Steelers on a short week, that will have to change. Otherwise, the Bengals will fall to 2-5 on the season.
