The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that the team has placed injured backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. (eye) on injured reserve, while claiming safety Reuben Lowery off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens in a corresponding 53-man roster move.
Richardson Sr. reportedly fractured his orbital bone while doing band work during pre-game warm ups this past Sunday in what’s assuredly a freak accident of sorts—as the equipment malfunctioned.
He’ll miss at least four games before being eligible to be activated again this regular season. The 3rd-year pro has appeared in 2 games, completing 1 of 2 throws (actually to himself) for 9 total passing yards.
In his absence, Colts rookie quarterback Riley Leonard will be elevated to QB2 during the interim period.
Meanwhile, Lowery is a 5’9”, 204 pound undrafted rookie out of Chattanooga. The former 3x All-SoCon conference member has appeared in 3 games (1 start), making 5 tackles (1 solo).
Per PFF, he has earned just a +41.2 overall grade so far this season, which ranks 129th out of 138 qualifying safeties.
Lowery made the Ravens active 53-man roster out of training camp and preseason—and even made a start in Week 5, but was surprisingly waived this weekend. The Colts made quick work scooping him off league waivers.
The Colts continue to regularly churn back of roster options for their depleted secondary. At safety, the Colts lost rookie Hunter Wohler for the entire season. Lowery has experience at cornerback and looks like a slot option.
