Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …
5) The Eagles offense lacks cohesion. The Eagles’ stunning 34-17 loss to the Giants on Thursday night was their second loss in five days, and cast a spotlight on the hiccups of the offense. The running game on which the Eagles leaned in steamrolling to a Super Bowl last season has been much less effective (Saquon Barkley has just 325 rushing yards in six games, and and his yards per attempt has dropped more than 2 yards to 3.4 yards per attempt). Jalen Hurts has been less sharp in operating the offense. The wide receivers have been frustrated by their roles. And even players are suggesting the offense is predictable. There are certainly plausible explanations — the offensive line is banged up, there is a new play-caller in offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo — but the Eagles are held to a higher standard because they are loaded with elite offensive talent. They survived their foibles early in the season, although A.J. Brown, among others, was pointing out issues even then. And none of this is fatal. The Eagles made adjustments during their bye last season and emerged a behemoth. But if they don’t come out of their mini-bye with a clearer offensive identity, these issues threaten to make a title defense that much more difficult.
Is this 2023 all over again for the Eagles’ offense? Is it worse? – The Athletic
The Eagles promoted Johnson and Patullo from within after neither had been a primary play caller in the NFL (Johnson, now assistant head coach and pass game coordinator for the Washington Commanders, had been a coordinator in college). Philly hired Steichen and Moore from the outside after both had called plays as NFL coordinators. Some regression from last season should have been expected after the Eagles won the Super Bowl following Saquon Barkley’s historic 2,005-yard regular season. Barkley’s decline in production — he is on pace for 921 yards, just 46 percent of his total from last season — appears more symptomatic of the Eagles’ issues than reflective of Barkley himself.
The Eagles have gone from bullies to bullied in the trenches – PhillyVoice
Is it fixable? The easy fix is to be less predictable on offense. That would help, but it will only go so far. Ideally, the above noted players will get healthy again, but that may not be realistic, given that many of their ailments date back to the long 2024 season. Maybe they’ll feel better as the season progresses, maybe not 🤷♂️. I’m not a doctor, but my guess is that the continued wear and tear of this season is only going to compound their pain. Maybe there’s a mindset issue at play here as well, especially on defense? As in, it’s a very young group of players, many of whom had a lot of success in college and already so far in the pros, and they’re learning that the NFL will beat you up if you don’t maintain your edge? That one is more of a theory, I guess. The bright side is that their trench play can’t get much worse, given their talent on both sides of the ball. Right? 😬

NFL hot seats: Mike McDaniel, Justin Fields, Brian Callahan – ESPN
After the pass interference call, the Eagles kept Kelee Ringo off the field for most of the fourth quarter, with the third-year pro coming back onto the field for only the final four snaps of the game, three of which were kneel-downs. Ringo himself admitted after the game that he didn’t perform well enough, saying that he “didn’t play to my standard entirely.” The Eagles can keep the faith with Ringo. They can turn back to Jackson, who was run through on a touchdown by Skattebo and has already essentially been benched once this season. They could eventually look toward Jakorian Bennett, though the summer trade acquisition played just 24 defensive snaps in three games before being placed on injured reserve with a pectoral injury and doesn’t have a clear timeframe for returning. To bring it full circle, though, this is Roseman’s team. If there’s one thing he’s known for besides drafting Georgia defenders, it’s making plenty of trades. With the deadline just weeks away and that outside cornerback role across from Mitchell and DeJean continuing to be a liability, would anyone be surprised if the Eagles made a move for a veteran cornerback who could step into the lineup at midseason? I’d expect Roseman to be hitting the phones in search of CB help between now and Nov. 4, which would squeeze Ringo out of a starting role.
Inside the five-year journey of Saquon Barkley’s documentary – PE.com
For Barkley, he said the entire process of the documentary helped him reflect on decisions he made. He saw scenarios where he could have been wrong and others where he made the right move. Barkley said it helped him grow as a person, and fans around the world will get a look into that journey on Thursday. “The big thing I do like about the doc, though, it’s not supposed to make me look perfect or [like] some star,” Barkley said. “If you look at the ‘Last Dance,’ I think that was a great chance for guys to really get to know Michael Jordan, the killer mindset that he had, and how great of a player he was. Yes, I had the phenomenal season last year, but I think it’s relatable for a lot of people that go through adversity in life.”
Who are the Eagles’ 10 biggest disappointments this year? – NBCSP
Jalen Hurts: The numbers look OK. Hurts is 4-2, he’s got eight TD passes and one interception, he’s completing 68 percent of his passes, his passer rating is 12th-highest in the league and he’s second to former New Jersey high school sprint champion JonathanTaylor in rushing touchdowns. But Hurts just hasn’t been consistent. He threw for only 59 yards and no TDs against the Cowboys. Threw for 39 yards in the second half vs. the Chiefs. Had 17 passing yards in the first half vs. the Rams. Didn’t complete a pass in the second half in Tampa. Put up just seven 2nd-half points vs. the Broncos. Didn’t put up any points after halftime Thursday night in the loss to the Giants. The Eagles have played six games, and Hurts hasn’t been consistently effective for 60 minutes in any of them. Not good enough from the Super Bowl MVP.
Bears at Commanders: Previewing tonight’s Monday Night Football game – Hogs Haven
Fan Duel has the Commanders as 5.5-point favorites. The Bears look vulnerable in the run game (on both offense and defense) and the Bears’ opponents in their two wins (Cowboys and Raiders) sport a combined record of 4-7-1, and a combined point differential of -56 for the season. I thought Bears fans might see this as a bit of slap in the face to a team on a 2-game win streak coming off a bye week, but I listened to a Bears beat writer on a podcast this week who said that he thought Chicago’s ceiling was likely to be 8 wins — maybe 9 if they got lucky with Lamar Jackson’s injury in two weeks. He scoffed at the idea that the Bears would be a playoff team this year. In the end, the Commanders are a year further along on their rebuil…er recalibration, and they are at home and coming off a good win against the Chargers. Most importantly, Jayden Daniels is healthy and has a career record of 16-7 as an NFL starting QB. There’s a lot for Commanders fans to be confident about heading into tonight’s game.
10 thoughts on the Cowboys disappointing 30-27 loss to the Panthers – Blogging The Boys
Not ready for playoffs. As good as it felt last week to get a convincing win on the road against the Jets, it feels equally disappointing to come up short against the Panthers. Defensively, it was tough to stomach, but even the offense wasn’t up to the task despite putting up 27 points. They had moments, and they have to be ready to be aggressive and make up the slack from a deficient defense. Good is not good enough. Losing this game gives the Cowboys a losing record and shows that this team just isn’t equipped to make a push for the playoffs, especially with tougher opponents looming.
Should the Giants buy or sell at NFL trade deadline? Maybe both – Big Blue View
The Giants have a rookie quarterback they are trying to support. As nice as his contribution against the Philadelphia Eagles was, Lil’Jordan Humphrey cannot replace Malik Nabers. No one the Giants could acquire in a trade at this point really could, but the Giants need to do whatever they can within reason to give Dart pass-catching weapons that will help his development and give the Giants an opportunity to make more splash plays. Schefter lists Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Brandin Cooks of the New Orleans Saints, Jakobi Meyers of the Las Vegas Raiders, Allen Lazard of the New York Jets, and Tyler Lockett of the Tennessee Titans as receivers he believes are available.
7 Penn State coaching candidates after James Franklin’s firing – SB Nation
Matt Rhule, Nebraska. As far as fit and culture go, there might not be a better option than Matt Rhule. The current Nebraska head coach was a walk-on player under Joe Paterno as a linebacker, and after starting his coaching career as a volunteer assistant for the Nittany Lions, he eventually worked his way through the ranks, including a long stint at Temple, where he went from a defensive line coach to head coach. Under athletic director Patrick Kraft, who now serves in that capacity at Penn State. Rhule has won at the college level at both Baylor and Temple, and with the Cornhuskers at 5-1, he’s put that program in line for a big season in his third campaign. He now has some NFL experience to go along with his time in the Big Ten. And if he can get Dylan Raiola to tag along ..
