Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …

Ranking bad NFL Week 5 losses for Cardinals, Eagles, Rams – ESPN

No offensive coordinator is going to be on the hot seat after a 4-1 start, but there are understandable questions about whether Patullo is finding the answers the Eagles need on the offensive side of the ball. This is the most expensive offense in NFL history in terms of cash spending, returning 10 of 11 starters from a devastating 2024 attack. Sure, guard Landon Dickerson was limited to 12 snaps in this game after suffering an ankle injury, and offensive tackle Lane Johnson was out for most of the Rams win with a stinger, but the Eagles are hardly the Ravens defense in terms of injuries. More than anything, this team doesn’t have a successful offensive identity right now, which is why so many of its star players are griping about not getting the ball frequently enough. It’s one thing for a wide receiver like Brown to complain about not getting it enough when Barkley is coming close to the single-season rushing record. It’s another when the run game isn’t creating explosive plays or even keeping the offense on schedule. This offense is 17th in EPA per play, down from sixth in 2024. Patullo’s quandary has to stretch to the quarterback. Likely in the hopes of keeping their signal-caller healthy for the full season, the Eagles have essentially removed Hurts from the designed run game. Stripping sneaks and scrambles out of the equation, Hurts has eight designed runs in five games this season. He has averaged about 3.5 designed runs per game over the prior three seasons. Those runs have an impact, even when Hurts doesn’t actually carry the football; the threat of Hurts keeping it on read plays or running counter or power concepts slows down opposing defenders, keeping them from chasing down Barkley when he gets the football. Do the Eagles get Hurts involved in the designed run game, even if just for a week or two, to try making life easier for Barkley? Does Patullo have another solution? Are he and Sirianni just going to spend each game leaning into whatever the biggest criticism of the offense was the prior week? Or will Barkley start finding those explosive runs that have been missing this season? The Eagles are going to be fine, but after 2024, the bar was supposed to be much higher than fine.

Eagles vs. Broncos: The good, the bad, and the ugly – BGN

This one was shaping up to be neat, tight and comfortable. In a span of 15 minutes, blank looks abound. The silence of Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday spoke. All Nick Sirianni could do was look down and shake his head. His sun glasses were hiding what had to be beaming red eyes, after the Eagles’ coach watched his team blow a two-score, fourth-quarter lead in losing their first game of the season, 21-17, to the Denver Broncos. The Eagles saw their franchise-tying 10-game winning streak and 12-game home winning streak come to a screeching halt. It marked the Eagles first home loss in over a year, when the Eagles lost to Atlanta (22-21 on Sept. 16, 2024).

Eagles-Broncos Takeaways With BLG! – The Ringer’s Philly Special

The Eagles fell to the Broncos 21-17 on Sunday for their first loss of the season. Sheil and Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation break down the biggest plays and what’s next for the Eagles. What were Sheil’s and BLG’s biggest takeaways from the game (2:30)? Why did the Eagles abandon the run during this game (13:47)? It appears A.J. Brown slowed down on a route that could’ve potentially been a touchdown for the Eagles but instead ended up being an incompletion (22:55). Did the officials play a part in the loss for the Eagles (32:34)? How beaten up is the offensive line (43:06)? How did the defense perform (48:35)? Plus, leftovers and a quick look ahead to the Giants game on Thursday.

Handing out 10 awards from the Eagles-Broncos game – PhillyVoice

Late in the third quarter still holding onto a 14-point lead, the Eagles called a shot play — a “dagger,” as Jalen Hurts called it during his postgame press conference — and it was wide open. Brown looked up for the ball but when he didn’t see it initially, he stopped running on the play for a moment, before realizing that Hurts had indeed let it rip. The ball sailed harmlessly over Brown’s head for an incompletion on what should have been a game-sealing touchdown. Execution mistakes happen, but what was more alarming was Brown’s and Hurts’ commentary about the play after the game. Asked if he talked to Hurts after the play, Brown said, “No.” Hurts was asked during his press conference what corrections or adjustments he’ll make with a receiver on the sideline after that type of play, and he more or less didn’t answer the question. “In that situation, that play was a shot,” Hurts said. “So, you either hit it or you don’t and we didn’t hot that one. So, we’ll watch the tape when we get the opportunity to and learn from it. But in that moment in the game it’s about finding a way to put the dagger in them, and that could have been the dagger.” It is clear that Hurts and Brown do not have the same personal relationship they once did, but if they can’t discuss what is happening on the field in-game — and for the record, we can see from the press box that they are not communicating on the sideline — that’s a big problem. It’s not that Hurts and Brown are not on the same page. They’re not in the same book right now.

Bad Ending – Iggles Blitz

Some fans will say to forget all that and focus on Saquon Barkley only having six carries. The Eagles led the NFL in percentage of rushing plays coming in. They tried to be more aggressive with passing today. Clearly Barkley needs more carries. But you aren’t going to have perfect balance very often. Penalties put the offense in some passing situations. When the coaches run the ball in those situations people complain that’s too conservative.

Roob’s Observations: Eagles’ deficiencies pile up in brutal loss to Broncos – NBCSP

The offense was just as bad, once again falling apart after an encouraging start. I felt pretty good about the offense after the 47-yard Saquon Barkley touchdown made it 17-3 early in the third quarter. I liked the aggressiveness in Kevin Patullo’s play calling. I liked the big plays. I liked the way Jalen Hurts was spreading the ball around. I thought maybe – maybe – they had figured something out. After that? Punt, punt, punt, punt. Five-and-out, three-and-out, three-and-out, three-and-out. A total of nine yards on those four drives. Then the last-minute desperation drive that fell one play short. The thing that’s so infuriating about this offense is just how they can look so good for stretches – a half here, a half there, a drive here, a drive there – and then they can just look so pathetic. At the worst possible time. They look really good at times and they just can’t sustain it. That’s what drives you nuts.

NFL Week 5 takeaways: What We Learned from Sunday’s 12 games – NFL.com

Eagles offense once again goes into a shell. Early on Sunday, the Eagles were doing pretty much whatever they wanted, staying ahead of the chains with good early-down gains and taking a 17-3 lead early in the third quarter on Saquon Barkley’s 47-yard catch. But Philly punted on its next four possessions, converting only one first down. It has mirrored the Eagles’ offensive issues this season, often looking competent for one half and downright icy in the other. They handed off only nine times all game, and eight of those came in the first half. It appeared as if the Eagles wanted to test Denver’s secondary, and they narrowly missed connecting on a few deep shots that could have changed the game’s complexion, but it wasn’t to be. The Broncos sacked Jalen Hurts six times and batted down nine of his 38 pass attempts. It was the first loss with Hurts starting in more than a calendar year, and though the sky isn’t suddenly falling, the Eagles’ offensive concerns cannot be dismissed.

Eagles muzzle Saquon Barkley and the run game, and it speaks volumes about Jalen Hurts – Inquirer

A reality is biting an O-line that just hasn’t been as superior as in year’s past, especially in the interior. Left guard Landon Dickerson left early with an ankle sprain, compounding knee and back injuries that have hindered him through the first month. “He’s been battling through a lot of stuff,” Toth said. Jurgens hasn’t been on the injury report, but he had offseason back surgery. “Every game is getting a little better,” he said, “But it’s football. You go out there, don’t matter if you’re 100 [percent] or 60. Your play is your play.” His play hasn’t been near his norm. Right guard Tyler Steen has so far acquitted himself, but there has been an obvious run blocking dropoff from predecessor Mekhi Becton. Tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata are holding steady, but the whole operation has been unstable. The tight ends can’t consistently hold blocks. The receivers don’t look as interested in participating. Defenses are making sure Barkley is running into heavier boxes against base personnel, rather than nickel, which the Eagles often gashed last season. But they also could pound the game away with heavy packages and their four-minute offense. Not so this season.

The Early Bird | New-look Eagles offense remains disjointed in loss to Broncos: ‘It’s not a capability thing’ – PHLY

While the lack of balance stands out after the fact, it’s hard to entirely fault the Eagles’ coaching staff for getting away from the run. Barkley averaged fewer than three yards per carry in each of the team’s previous two games as a result of the Eagles offensive line struggling to consistently generate creases against consistently loaded boxes the way the group did so well last season. Barkley is obviously a bigger part of a winning formula than he was during Sunday’s game, but the Eagles are still going to need to supplement the run game with more creative drive-sustaining calls to find the right balance moving forward.

Jalen Hurts: I take responsibility for everything, try to find solutions – PFT

“I can’t tell you what the issue is,” Hurts said. “Ultimately, I can take accountability for everything and take responsibility for it all. The lack of execution and maybe lack of sense of urgency in how our operation is. And so I take the responsibility for all of it because I’m just trying to find solutions for it. Just trying to grow and learn from it and I look at this as an opportunity in itself. You play the game to win and when you don’t, you learn from it.” Hurts said “certain things don’t get you until they get you” in reference to how the team was able to go 4-0 despite the uneven offensive performances. Those things got the Eagles on Sunday and the next question will be whether the unhappy ending will lead to the team finding a way to get into the rhythm that’s eluded them through five weeks.

AAA Official Review: Jalen Hurts says ‘it’s not a capability thing’ – PE.com

Jalen Hurts: ‘It’s not a capability thing’. The Eagles have at times looked unstoppable on both sides of the ball, like in the second half against the Rams and the first half versus the Buccaneers. However, they are yet to put together a complete game this season. Jalen Hurts said multiple times postgame that there was a lack of execution against the Broncos, but he knows the Eagles have the talent to be the team they strive to be. “It is about us, and how we look into our process and we have to truly take that a day at a time so we can make it as difficult or as easy as it needs to be,” Hurts said. “Ultimately, we just have to have the right mentality going into this week and every week and take [control of] the things that we can control, assess our systems, assess our process, assess all of these things and say, ‘What can we improve on? What’s working?’ Not even what’s working, what’s efficient, what can we improve on, and really evaluate that and grow. But I say this again, it’s not a capability thing. We just have to really stay focused on the task at hand, stay focused on the main thing, and be bought into the collective of doing that by any means necessary. So this is a great one to learn from and we will learn from it.”

Eagles star shares his opinion on controversial no-call vs. Broncos – NJ.com

Goedert weighed in on the no-call that had Eagles fans fuming. “Jalen threw it up to me, and they obviously didn’t throw a flag,” Goedert said in the postgame locker room. “Have to go back and see it on tape. But it would have been interesting to see what happened (if they did throw a flag).” Goedert said he didn’t receive an explanation from the sideline or head referee. Referee Adrian Hill told a PFWA pool reporter the following when asked about the Goedert no-call: “Our officials saw mutual hand fighting and hand-to-hand combat and did not see action that rose to the level of a foul on that play.” Goedert was asked if he felt as though he was interfered with in the moment. “I felt like there was a little bit of contact there. Nothing was called,” Goedert said. “But the game really shouldn’t have even come down to that.” Goedert is right about that.

The Eagles’ offensive issues finally cost them a game. What’s the deal? – The Athletic

On the bright side for Philly, the Eagles are averaging more offensive points per game (22.4), more offensive touchdowns per game (2.8) and have a better record (4-1) than through five games during the 2024 championship season. There’s plenty of time for this offense to hit stride. With games against the Giants (road), Vikings (road) and Giants (home) before a Week 9 bye, this team easily could have a 7-1 or 6-2 record at the break. Which might not change some of the underlying issues. Left tackle Jordan Mailata revealed that his body felt the strain of a long and highly productive 2024 season. Right tackle Lane Johnson has missed 71 snaps while battling stinger injuries. Guard Landon Dickerson battled through an injury suffered in training camp but played only 12 snaps against the Broncos. The Eagles have almost always been able to lean on an elite line. Everything changes if that is not the case again this season.

Winners and losers from the Broncos 21-17 victory over the Eagles – Mile High Report

Holy shit. For three quarters, that felt like another disappointing and lifeless loss by the Broncos against a contender. They were down 17-3, gave up big plays on defense, and couldn’t do anything on offense. However, once we hit the 4th quarter, the Broncos came alive and orchestrated an impressive comeback and were able to upset the previously undefeated Eagles. The Broncos dethroned the reigning Super Bowl Champions. This is a signature win for Sean Payton, Bo Nix, and the Denver Broncos. Now, when it comes to winners and losers, well, it was a rollercoaster of a game. A number of the heroes in this game were losers through three quarters, but in the end, we will lean on the positive side due to the victory. With all that said, here are your winners and losers from the Broncos’ 21-17 victory over the Eagles.

Commanders Vs. Chargers – Studs and Duds – Hogs Haven

Duds: Frankie Luvu: Luvu continues to miss tackles and seems lost in coverage. I understand he’s acclimating to a “different” role this season, but so far, he’s been a bit underwhelming. Is Dud status a bit harsh here – maybe… however he seems to be a completely different player from the one we saw last season.

10 thoughts on the Cowboys 37-22 soaring victory over the Jets – Blogging The Boys

The Dallas Cowboys are back in the win column after a convincing 37-22 win over the New York Jets. It was the first time they had beaten the Jets on the road since 2003 in Bill Parcells’ first year as the Cowboys coach. The Jets entered this game winless, but so were the Chicago Bears before Dallas came to town and laid out the red carpet for Caleb Williams and their offense, so we weren’t sure what to expect in this one. Despite being banged up all along the offensive line and in the wide receiver corps, the Cowboys came out with their engines roaring and ready to thrust themselves back into playoff contention. Here on 10 thoughts on the Cowboys’ win over the Jets on Sunday.

Giants-Saints ‘Kudos & Wet Willies’: Giants give away a game they should have won – Big Blue View

Jaxson Dart — The rookie quarterback had, to be honest, a rookie quarterback kind of day. He looked awesome the first two times the Giants had the ball, leading touchdown drives that resulted in 1 and 15-yard touchdown passes to Theo Johnson. Then, he looked like a young quarterback with a lot to learn. He fumbled away a ball when he was untouched, failing to protect it while trying to scramble and having it slip out of his hand. He underthrew Slayton on a flea flicker that should have been a touchdown. He threw the first two interceptions of his NFL career, not that he can really be blamed for either with the Giants desperately trying to rally in the fourth quarter. Dart was 11 of 16 for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. He want 15 of 24 for 92 yards and two interceptions in the second half.

The NFL’s goal line fumbling epidemic needs to stop now – SB Nation

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. This phrase, attributed to George Santayana, is typically used to describe geopolitical events, not football. But in Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season, it certainly applies. Last week, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell was on his way to the end zone against the Los Angeles Rams with a clear touchdown, but celebrated before crossing the goal line, losing the football in the process. Instead of a touchdown for the Colts, the ball went through the end zone for a touchback. The Rams ended up winning the game.
