Other Giant observations
With NY Giants desperate for emotional makeover, Jaxson Dart’s presence emerging already | The Record
If Jaxson Dart was not being genuine, talking smack to New York Giants teammates Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns on the practice field would have hit differently, and not in a good way.
Refusing to back down from Malik Nabers when he was challenged on the basketball court during a pickup game in July would have been a mistake if teammates were convinced it was all for show.

Kayvon Thibodeaux finally reaching known Giants potential with ‘no magic sauce’ to it | New York Post
Could it be the impact of his unique offseason wrestling training? Could it be the arrival of rookie Abdul Carter to lengthen the edge rusher rotation and keep Thibodeaux’s legs fresher later into games? Could it be the extra motivation to reach another level with his next contract negotiation waiting in the wings?
“There’s no magic sauce, there’s no secret,” Thibodeaux told The Post. “Things are working out. I’m playing fast. I’m playing well, things look good. I’ve always been the same guy. I’ve been working this hard. Anybody saying what they are saying — I’m happy they feel that way — but it’s just opinions of the work.”
NFL rookie rankings at quarter mark of 2025 season: Abdul Carter, Emeka Egbuka, Tyler Warren top list | NFL.com
1) Abdul Carter, New York Giants. With established veterans Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux on the edges, Carter has been more of a moveable chess piece on DC Shane Bowen’s board, splitting duties as a pass rusher and traditional off-ball linebacker. But as we saw in this past Sunday’s upset of the Chargers, this dude has juice off the edge that can’t be taught. Just ask Justin Herbert, who took a whopping five QB hits from Carter, with Pro Football Focus crediting the rookie with eight pressures on the day. Yes, the disruptive display came against a severely compromised Bolts O-line, but that doesn’t entirely diminish the effort. Good edge rushers abuse backup tackles. That’s what Carter did. And four games into the season, I have the same feeling I’ve had since April: The Giants got the No. 1 player in the draft at No. 3 overall.
21) Cam Skattebo. Aptly described as a “carnage creator” by my colleague Lance Zierlein, Skattebo gutsily gives you everything he’s got in his 5-11, 215-pound frame, playing with a fearlessness that’s fully captivating. And he’s versatile, too, as evidenced by his Sunday night showing in Week 3, when he led the Giants with 60 yards rushing, 61 yards receiving and scored the team’s only touchdown. The Chiefs unimpressively earned their first win of the season on that night, but Skattebo was the most entertaining player on the field.
Q: I was watching our behind-the-scenes “Sights & Sounds” video. You’re often asked about your message to fans. Does what you said after the first touchdown pretty much sum it up?
Daboll: “Well, it was a good play. I was juiced up too. That’s some emotion you get from a good play, a good finish in the red zone, which we haven’t had. The emotion of this game – it’s an emotional game. You feel it as a coach too. When you execute well, the crowd gets into it. That’s home-field advantage. That’s what we need to do.”

Giants RB Cam Skattebo has 181 rushing yards and 98 receiving yards through four career games. If he has a productive day Sunday, Skattebo would be the fourth Giants rookie since the 1970 merger with 200 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards through five career games.
NFL quarter-season superlatives and early lessons as teams find their identities | The Athletic
There are some strong candidates, and Kevin Byard III (Bears), Kam Curl (Rams) and Tremaine Edmunds (Bears) each have recorded multiple-interception games. But the best has to go to the 6-foot-4, 347-pound Dwxtwr Lawrence, who, while being double-teamed, got his hands up to deflect a Justin Herbert pass, batting it into the air, came off the double-team, snatched the ball out of the air and rumbled 37 yards before getting toppled.
Early NFL trends: Record-worst starts for Cowboys, Bengals, Eagles | ESPN.com
The New York Giants have the third-worst run defense. It’s interesting to consider that the Giants currently rank 12th in run stop win rate (31.1%). But watch out when running backs get to the second level. Currently, the Giants are allowing 1.83 open-field yards — more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage. Only Chicago’s defense is worse. The run stop win rate suggests that the Giants’ run defense is playing better than the results would otherwise indicate. It’s likely that things will improve and New York does a better job of stopping opposing running backs.
Andrew Thomas details Jaxson Dart’s leadership off the field
What Jaxson Dart must improve in second start; examining Russell Wilson’s trade market | The Athletic
The Bengals stick out as a team in need of a quarterback with Joe Burrow sidelined long-term and backup Jake Browning struggling in two starts for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. The challenge in dealing Wilson is that other teams have access to the film of his three starts this season. Aside from lighting up the staggeringly bad Cowboys defense in Week 2, the 36-year-old Wilson looked washed up.
Could the Bengals or another team get desperate enough to send the Giants a late-round pick closer to the trade deadline? It’s possible. But don’t expect teams to be lining up to trade for a quarterback who got benched after three games.
After Malik Nabers’ injury, Giants players urge NFL owners to consider ditching turf | NJ.com
Safety Jevon Holland signed with the Giants this past offseason, but he has plenty of negative experience with MetLife Stadium’s turf. In 2023, on the new surface, Holland was playing for the Dolphins against the Jets when he slipped and sprained the medial collateral ligament in both knees on the same play.
“I could blame it on [the turf], but I could also blame it on poor technique and positioning — for my specific example,” he said. “Turfs are different. Dallas’ turf is different than our turf. Our turf is different the Bills’ turf. [The MetLife turf is] squishy. If you were to stand in one spot and jump up and down, you would feel yourself indent into the turf. I don’t know if that’s a bad thing or a good thing. I’m not sure of the specifics of what would cause more injuries. I just know that turf is a lot squishier. The Bills’ turf is harder. The Patriots’ turf is kind of in between.”
This week’s opponent
“You wish you already had one, but it’s a team thing,” Rattler said,. “It’s in the past and we’re focused on the future. So, it’ll come. We’re working hard this week to get it.”
“What happened in the past is relevant, but it’s only a piece of the puzzle. So, for Spencer and I, we’re 0 for 4,” Saints coach Kellen Moore said. “He’s grown a ton through this whole entire process. He’s a young quarterback. Nothing’s going to go perfect. We understand that. He’s put us in position to win these games, we just haven’t gotten it done.”
Key matchups: Saints vs. Giants | Canal Street Chronicles
The biggest emphasis on the game for New Orleans on Sunday will be the running game. The Giants are allowing 153 rush yards per game to opposing offenses, while the Saints are top-10 in the league in rushing yards per game. In the loss to the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans had a strong run game, splitting carries between Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller. t New Orleans has been consistent running the ball all year. The black and gold are poised for another strong day on the ground and could take advantage of their strong running game against a weak Giants run defense to get their first win of the season.
Saints TEs Foster Moreau and Taysom Hill returned to practice this week for the first time since last season, when both sustained serious knee injuries. Though it’s unlikely either will play this weekend, coach Kellen Moore didn’t rule it out completely. Getting both players back will be a big boost to the offense.
“With 108 seconds left in the 2024 season, I got a helmet to the outside of the knee on a five-step out route, and my offseason is canceled,” Moreau said. “It’s brutal, and that part of sports is one of the hardest parts. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. And I’ve had a hell of an offseason.”
