Heading into this Sunday’s game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, the Cleveland Browns have made a change at the most important position on the field ahead of their matchup with our Minnesota Vikings.
The Browns have announced that rookie Dillon Gabriel will get the start on Sunday, meaning he’ll be making his first NFL start against Brian Flores’ defense.
Cleveland selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He started his college career at Central Florida before transferring to Oklahoma and then finishing at Oregon. As the Ducks’ starting quarterback in 2024, he was name a First-Team All-American, the Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, and the Big Ten Most Valuable Player. He also tied Case Keenum for the most touchdown passes thrown in a college football career with 155.
Since coming to Minnesota, Brian Flores has had a great deal of success against rookie quarterbacks, compiling a record of 4-0 in those games. That includes going 2-0 against #1 overall pick Caleb Williams last year, as well as victories over teams led by Bryce Young and Aidan O’Connell in 2023.
So far this season, the Browns have yet to score more than 17 points in any of their four contests. They’re obviously hoping that Gabriel can bring a spark that, to this point, the fossilized husk of Joe Flacco has been unable to provide.
Does hearing the news that the Browns will start a rookie at quarterback on Sunday make you feel any better about the Vikings’ chances of a victory in this one?
