The Miami Dolphins picked up their first win of the 2025 NFL season last night — defeating the New York Jets by a score of 27-21 on Monday Night Football.
Despite, the victory, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Mike McDaniel’s squad as they lost star wide receiver Tyreek Hill for the season due to a gruesome knee dislocation early in the third quarter.
Hill recorded a first down grab along the Jets’ sideline when he was hit low, the defender spinning down and twisting Tyreek’s leg during the tackle. Hill immediately clutched his knee as the broadcast showed a closeup of his ankle/foot pointing the wrong direction. Punctuating the devastation, Dolphins and Jets players simultaneously dropped to their knees in quiet concern for the man nicknamed The Cheetah.
Hill would be carted off of the field while he put on a brave face — smiling and waving to the crowd as he exited the playing surface at Hard Rock Stadium for possibly the last time as a member of the Miami Dolphins.
Later, Adam Schefter of ESPN would report on the extent of Hill’s injury.
Multiple Dolphins players voiced their support for Hill following Monday’s win. Fellow wide receiver Jaylen Waddle had this to say to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post:
“Prayers to him. It’s tough. It’s just sad anytime you see someone go down, you know, but a guy — that stature — what he means to the team, what he means to the game of football — just his legacy — and everything he did during his career. It’s always tough.”
The Dolphins will have to make a decision on the future of Tyreek Hill this coming offseason. According to ESPN, a post-June 1 cut or trade of Hill would save Miami $36 million in salary cap space, while creating roughly $15.9 million in dead cap in 2026 and $12.4 million in 2027.
Have we seen the last of Tyreek Hill in a Miami Dolphins uniform? Time will tell, but for now, our thoughts are with the 31-year-old receiver as he undergoes surgery and embarks upon a grueling recovery process.
