For the second week in a row, there’s unexpected news of the Philadelphia Eagles placing one of their players on injured reserve.
Last week it was Nolan Smith.
This week it’s Charley Hughlett.
The Eagles placed their 35-year-old long snapper on IR and signed free agent Cal Adomitis, according to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
Adomitis, a Pittsburgh native, originally signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Pitt in 2022. He appeared in 49 games with Cincy over the previous three seasons before losing a long snapper battle to rookie Will Wagner this summer.
The extent of Hughlett’s injury is currently unknown. He’s struggled to stay healthy since last season, when he missed 12 games with the Cleveland Browns. Hughlett also missed some time in training camp/preseason this summer, leading the Eagles to sign Christian Johnstone to temporarily long snap for them.
Johnstone is still a free agent but the Eagles opted for the more experienced Adomitis instead. Note that former Eagles long snapper and two-time Super Bowl champion Rick Lovato is now long snapping for the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Eagles will hope that losing Hughlett and replacing him with Adomitis doesn’t negatively impact Jake Elliott or Braden Mann, who’ve both been playing well to start the 2025 season.
UPDATE: The Eagles announced this signing among other reason moves. A full recap:
- LS Charley Hughlett and EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo to injured reserve.
- LS Cal Adomitis signed to the roster.
- LB Lance Dixon released from the practice squad.
By putting two players on IR and only making one signing, the Birds still have one open roster spot. And it seemingly won’t be going to Kenyon Green, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad.
