Here are some live updates from the Las Vegas Raiders home game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday:
First quarter
The Bears got the ball first and the Raiders forced a three-and-out as defensive tackle Thomas Booker continued to make plays.
On their first drive, the Raiders moved the ball with a 9-yard pass from Geno Smith t0 Jakobi Meyers and a 12-yard run by Ashton Jeanty. But on third and long, Smith was intercepted and the Bears returned the ball to the Las Vegas 24. It was a bad decision and bad throw by Smith. It was his first pick of the young season.
The Raiders’ defense, led by a pass deflection by star defensive end Maxx Crosby, forced the Bears to settle for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 9:04 to go in the quarter.
The Raiders went for it on fourth and 1 deep in their own territory and it was badly blown up as the offensive line was badly beaten and Jeanty was hit and fumbled and the Bears recovered the ball inside the Raiders’ 20. It’s the first time in six years that the Raiders committed turnovers on their first two possessions.
However, disaster was averted when Maxx Crosby, who has had a great start to the game, caught an interception on his own tipped pass and took it the Raiders’ 35. It was the star’s first interception of his career. The Raiders have five tipped balls already and are keeping the team in the game on defense.
The Raiders’ offense cashed in on Crosby’s big play and went down the field, culminating with a 8-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Jeanty to take a 7-3 lead with eight seconds to go in the first quarter.
This is the Raiders’ first lead this season after the first quarter.
Second quarter:
The Bears got into scoring position, but two big plays by Maxx Crosby and Tyree Wilson forced a punt. Crosby is playing his brains out, folks.
But Smith was picked off once again by Bears’ defensive back Kevin Byard and the Bears got the ball at the Raider’s 24. That’s the third Raiders’ turnover deep in their territory. Smith has thrown five of his six interceptions at home.
The Las Vegas defense held again as the Bears had to settle for a field goal to cut the Raiders’ lead to 7-6 with 5:22 to go in the half. The Bears got the ball inside the Raiders’ 25 on three turnovers have just six points.
Dylan Laube returned the kickoff to the 36 to give the Raiders nice field position.
Jeanty then had the play of his y0ung career with a 64-yard touchdown run to give the Raiders a 14-6 lead. The Bears’ run defense stinks and the Raiders took advantage. Jeanty is the first Raiders’ rookie with a running and receiving touchdown in the game game since Bo Jackson did it in 1987.
The Bears cut the Raiders’ lead to 14-9 with 53 seconds to go in the half.
The Bears had just two rushing yards in the first half.
Raiders 14, Bears 14-9 at halftime.
Third quarter:
Smith threw his third pick of the game (all in Raiders’ territory) to open the second half. Geez, Geno.
The Bears finally chased in on their four turnovers recovered in Raiders territory with their first touchdown as the offense finally came alive when Caleb Williams hit Las Vegas native Rome Odunze for a 27-yard touchdown pass on third down to take a 16-14 lead with 11:38 to go in the quarter.
The Jeanty break-out game continued as he scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Smith, culminating a very strong drive as Las Vegas took a 21-16 lead with 5:23 to go in the third quarter. He has three touchdowns Sunday. The last Raiders’ rookie to score three touchdowns in a game was Jackson.
It’s Raiders 21, Bears 16 at the end of three quarters.
Fourth quarter:
The Bears hit a 51-yard field goal to make it a 21-19 game early in the fourth quarter.
Raheem Mostert, active for the first time this season, broke off a 38-yard run. It setup a field goal to give the Raiders a 24-19 lead with 6:45 to go.
The Bears then went on a long drive and took the lead, 25-24, with 1:34 to go on a short touchdown run. They did not covert the two-point conversion. The Raiders can win it with a field goal.
Laube had a 38-yard kick return to give the Raiders great field positon and the Raiders quickly went into Chicago territory
The Raiders tried a 54-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson to try to win the game, but it was blocked. Game over.
Final score:
Bears 25, Raiders 24.
