It took a few weeks for the New York Giants’ brass to hand the keys to their rookie playmakers, but the time is here. Cam Skattebo and Jaxson Dart are now leading New York’s new-look offense, and their efforts, as well as timely defense, propelled the Giants to their first win of the season — a 21-18 upset victory over the previously undefeated Los Angeles Chargers.

While Skattebo has ramped up into a workhorse back for New York amid Tyrone Tracy Jr.’s shoulder injury suffered in Week 3, Sunday’s contest marked Dart’s first NFL start. The first-round pick flashed franchise-quarterback potential in the preseason with an 84.6 PFF overall grade across three games. But the preseason is the preseason.

Dart ensured that success extended into his regular-season debut. His modest passing stat line — 13-of-20 passing for 111 yards and a touchdown — doesn’t tell the full story of a rookie signal-caller who efficiently led the Giants’ offense with his arm and legs. He earned an 80.5 PFF overall grade from clean pockets, pending all-22 reviews, and generated 54 yards and a score on the ground. His play under pressure will ultimately drag his final grade down, but all signs point to it being something to build on.

Meanwhile, Skattebo was a safety blanket for Dart. He handled a whopping 25 carries, forced four missed tackles on the ground, picked up 57 yards after contact and accounted for four first downs, despite his low 3.2 yards per carry. It wasn’t a flashy outing, but it was exactly what New York’s offense needed as Dart navigated the Chargers’ stingy defense. His initial 74.5 PFF rushing grade ranked sixth among qualifying running backs after the early slate.

The Giants will ultimately need more out of their offense moving forward after Russell Wilson’s unreliable play led to the team’s 0-3 start. The defense was similarly boom-or-bust. Star wide receiver Malik Nabers’ potentially season-ending knee injury is a massive blow to a team that may just be getting going, but Week 4’s win proved that both units could sync for winning football, and at the forefront were Dart and Skattebo. That may be true for many years to come.
