Giants vs. Chargers, Week 4: Numbers that matter

Here are a few numbers to know for Sunday’s game between the 0-3 New York Giants and 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers.

From NextGen Stats

  • Rookie QBs making their first career start vs an undefeated team in Week 4 or later are 0-4 since 2000.Jaxson Dart will be looking to be the first to win since Phil Simms in 1979 vs the 5-0 Buccaneers.
  • The importance of Andrew Thomas: Two of the three offensive linemen that have allowed the highest pressure rates this season (min. 50 pass blocks) are Giants left tackles James Hudson (18.5%) and Marcus Mbow (18.8%) while filling in for the injured Andrew Thomas. Mbow allowed a 33.3% pressure rate in Week 3 against the Chiefs, 7 percentage points higher than any other lineman with at least 20 pass blocks in a game this year. Thomas played on a pitch count in rotation with Mbow in Week 3, not allowing a pressure on his 11 pass blocks.
  • Dru Phillips vs. Keenan Allen: Giants cornerback Andru Phillips has allowed more than twice as many receiving yards (182) as any other defensive player when in coverage against receivers aligned in the slot this season. His 23 targets against such receivers are almost double that of the next-closest player (12). Matchup: Chargers’ 13th-year receiver Keenan Allen has the highest target rate (32.6%) among pass catchers with at least 40 routes from the slot this season. He’s caught 12 of 14 such targets for 102 yards and a touchdown.
  • Joe Alt vs. Brian Burns: Joe Alt has allowed a pressure on just 6.3% of his pass blocks through Week 3, the fourth-lowest rate among left tackles with at least 50 pass blocks. Matchup: Brian Burns has aligned on the right edge on 60.1% of his defensive snaps this season, positioning him to face Alt on most plays. Burns is tied for the seventh-most sacks (3) and the 26th-most pressures (11) through three games. However, his 10.8% pressure rate is down from his career average of 13.6%.
