After losing three consecutive games to open the 2025 NFL season — including back-to-back divisional contests — the Miami Dolphins find themselves with an 0-3 record heading into a pivotal matchup on Monday Night Football against the visiting New York Jets.
One reason why the Dolphins are underperforming is the fact that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s individual play has been significantly lacking compared to his prior seasons under head coach Mike McDaniel.
Through three contests, Miami’s quarterback is averaging just 191.6 passing yards per game. He has thrown a total of five touchdowns — but has also thrown four interceptions as well. In addition to those interceptions, he also has a fumble lost on the season, giving him five turnovers overall.
Speaking with the South Florida media after practice on Thursday, Tagovailoa had this to say about his recent struggles:
“I haven’t played anywhere near the standard that I’ve played in years past and knowing the standard that I can play to. It starts with me — with the offense, getting our guys going. And then the defense being able to feed off of that as well, right? I wouldn’t say that I’ve been playing my best football yet.”
Tagovailoa was paid handsomely following his stellar 2023 season — a season in which he led the league in passing yards with 4,624. Since then, his play has diminished.
Miami’s quarterback mentioned injuries taking their toll when asked why his game is different now than when he was starring at the University of Alabama.
“One of the biggest changes and differences that I’ve felt [since my time at Alabama] would have been some of the surgeries that I’ve had… I can kind of feel some of the residuals within my ankles. I was running a little different when I was at Alabama and it’s just not the same [now]. I think that’s normal given the surgeries and everything that comes with the sport.”
Regardless of how Tagovailoa’s body feels, the Miami Dolphins need wins. No excuses. They’ll look to get back to their winning ways against the Jets on Monday night.
