The Philadelphia Eagles are claiming wide receiver Xavier Gipson off waivers from the New York Giants and waiving Kenyon Green, according to an official team announcement.
Gipson originally signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Stephen F. Austin State University in 2023. You may remember him from this moment on HBO’s Hard Knocks where former Jets general manager and current Eagles senior personnel director/advisor to the GM Joe Douglas told Gipson he made New York’s 53-man roster after a good training camp:
The 5’9”, 189 pound Gipson played in 34 games for the Jets before this season, logging three starts at wide receiver along the way. His 48 targets resulted in 268 yards (9.9 average) and one touchdown. He also had nine carries go for 73 rushing yards (8.1 average) and one score.
The Eagles likely aren’t claiming Gipson to have him on play offense as much as they are interested in his returning ability. On 68 career punt returns, Gipson has average 8.9 yards and scored one touchdown. He also has 44 kick returns to his name for a 26.0 average. Since the new NFL kickoff format was enacted in 2024, he has a 28.7 average.
One reason Gipson is available is because ball security has been an issue. He has 10 career fumbles, one of which occurred in Week 1 this season. It happened to be a costly fourth quarter mistake in the Jets’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After being waived by the Jets, Gipson was claimed by the New York Giants. But he only remained on their roster for nine days and didn’t play in a game before getting waived again.
Now in Philly, Gipson is a contender to return kicks and/or punts for the Eagles. The Birds notably struggled with the Los Angeles Rams’ knuckle ball kickoffs in Week 3, which regularly led to bad starting field position for the offense. Perhaps Gipson can help solve some of their woes … but he won’t last long if he continues to fumble the football.
Green’s departure comes as no surprise since it was surprising that the Eagles brought him back to the roster. Here’s a recap of the transactions he’s been involved in:
