Colts QB Daniel Jones ‘aced’ last week’s test, but continued consistency remains key

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was in full control during last weekend’s thrilling home win against the Denver Broncos notoriously stingy defense. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was in full control during last weekend’s thrilling home win against the Denver Broncos notoriously stingy defense.

Jones completed 23 of 34 pass attempts (67.6%) for 316 total passing yards, a passing touchdown, 0 interceptions, and a passer rating of 107.0.

It wasn’t just the rock solid stat line that was impressive though.

Jones was masterful, once again featuring great command and execution of the Colts offense. While he’s still taking a lot of the more underneath routes, Jones was able to effectively progress through his receiver reads, fit footballs into tight receiving windows, avoid turnovers, and perhaps most impressively, make plays under duress.

That’s something that previously plagued him during New York Giants tenure, as when their offensive line crumbled, so did Jones oftentimes. That wasn’t the case last weekend against the Broncos, as Jones was cool, calculated, and poised under pressure—continuously making plays.

Week 2 was a big test for Jones, and he happened to pass with flying colors.

Hosting an arguably dysfunctional (and maybe even not all that good?) Miami Dolphins team in Week 1, the Broncos were expected to be a tall order for Jones and the Colts offense. Instead, the Colts offense accumulated 473 total yards, scored 29 offensive points, had 0 turnovers, and won the time of possession 32:07 to 27:53.

The former 6th overall pick of the Giants has shown flashes in the past. In fact, it once earned him a 4-year, $160 million contract extension with New York back in March of 2023. It’s just been consistency that’s plagued Jones. He’s played pretty good football for stretches only to succumb to inconsistency, turnovers, and injuries.

That being said, with how things are going right now in Indianapolis, he’s arguably taken his game to another level, especially from a mental standpoint. Whether that’s because of better coaching or a stronger supporting (particularly along the offensive line) isn’t entirely clear. However, Jones is playing some really good ball now.

Among his current feats:

-His 588 total passing yards are the 2nd most in the NFL.

-His passer rating of 111.1 is 6th best overall.

-His EPA per dropback of +0.35 is third best.

He travels to the Tennessee Titans this weekend to take on a struggling defense that ranks 23rd in the NFL, allowing 26.5 points per game so far this season. It will be Jones first road game with the Colts, and he’ll look to keep his early season momentum going against a currently winless divisional rival Titans team.
