Let’s check the Week 3 NFL Power Rankings and see where the New York Giants are after a disheartening 40-37 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

It’ll be hard to pivot to Jaxson Dart after the way Russell Wilson played in Dallas.

Biggest QB takeaway: Russell Wilson’s job security is tenuous
After Wilson completed less than 50% of his passes and the Giants didn’t score a touchdown in Week 1, there were plenty of public calls for Wilson’s job. This became the Giants’ reality once they drafted Jaxson Dart and then made him the backup. It instantly put pressure on Wilson. The way the veteran keeps his job is — at a minimum — by throwing the deep ball like he did on Sunday. On passes of 20-plus air yards, he went 7-of-11 for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

OK, so maybe Jaxson Dart will keep sitting for a while. Russell Wilson had a great game Sunday, though a reckless overtime interception was a crushing mistake. We’ll see if the Giants have turned a corner on offense or they just happened to be playing a bad Cowboys defense.
CBS — Prisco (No. 26, up 3)
Russell Wilson did some good things in the loss to the Cowboys, which should quiet the Jaxson Dart talk for a while. But they are still 0-2.
NFL.com — Edholm (No. 27, up 2)
Russell Wilson threw for 450 yards and hit Malik Nabers on a 48-yard TD strike with 33 seconds remaining to give the Giants a lead they couldn’t protect. The Cowboys were at their own 33-yard line with 14 seconds left and still found a way to tie it. Then Wilson and the offense went ice cold in overtime, with a punt and an interception, and the Cowboys ripped the Giants’ hearts out with another Brandon Aubrey field goal to win it. Wilson’s performance will quiet the Jaxson Dart talk a bit. But with games upcoming against the Chiefs and Chargers and an 0-2 record slung around their necks, the Giants are facing even more pressure. Letting that game slip through their fingers could be one we look back on later.

Overreaction: Brian Daboll can’t keep getting away with this
New York lost for the 13th time in its last 14 games Sunday, and it can’t blame Russell Wilson this time. The 36-year-old quarterback had 450 passing yards, three touchdowns and an interception against the Cowboys. It was his best game since 2022 as measured by EPA (0.46 per dropback) and the eye test, and the Giants still lost. Our bet is Daboll is still itching to start rookie Jaxson Dart to increase his own job security, though.
USA Today (No. 25, up 3)
Next up, a pair of dates with AFC West teams (Chiefs, Chargers) — so looking at Week 5 against the Saints as the possible sweet spot to insert rookie QB Jaxson Dart into the lineup, which might also coincide with Russell Wilson’s arm falling off.
Sports Illustrated (No. 27, up 2)
New York Post (No. 25, up 3)
The Giants’ ninth straight loss to the Cowboys was sealed when Brandon Aubrey became the first kicker in NFL history with a field goal as time expired in regulation and another as time expired in overtime. Fourteen penalties for 160 yards and five consecutive scoring possessions allowed was enough to negate Russell Wilson’s 450-yard passing day in a 40-37 defeat.
