We’ve made it through the first quarter of play at U.S. Bank Stadium, and your Minnesota Vikings trail the Atlanta Falcons by a score of 6-0. . .and, honestly, it could be a whole lot worse.
The Falcons won the coin toss and, rather than defer to the second half, elected to receive the opening kickoff. They immediately turned to running back Bijan Robinson, who picked up a combined 42 yards on his first two carries to quickly put the Falcons into Minnesota territory. The Falcons appeared ready to go for it on a 4th-and-2 from inside the red zone, but the crowd at U.S. Bank Stadium caused a second delay of game penalty on the drive, and the Falcons settled for a 38-yard field goal from (John) Parker Romo to give themselves an early 3-0 lead.
The Vikings came out for their first drive and found themselves facing a 4th-and-1 from their own 37-yard line, and went for it with a quarterback sneak. However, J.J. McCarthy mishandled the snap on the sneak attempt and was unable to push to the line to gain for a turnover on downs.
With the good field position, Atlanta quickly found themselves in the red zone again, and once again they could not punch it into the end zone, so they called on Romo again. He hit from 29 yards out to extend the Atlanta lead to 6-0.
Unfortunately for the Vikings, the offense continued its early-game struggles, as McCarthy was sacked on third down of the next possession to force another three-and-out. The Falcons were pushing into Minnesota territory again, and then Eric Wilson happened.
The forced fumble gave the Vikings the ball back with their best field position of the night, and as we move to the second quarter, they’ve finally picked up a first down and are looking at a 1st-and-10 from their own 42-yard line.
One quarter in the books from U.S. Bank Stadium, and the Vikings need to start picking it up as they trail the Falcons by a score of 6-0. Come on in and join us for the second quarter of play!
