Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has had one of the best statistical careers of any passers in NFL history. On Sunday, the veteran QB added another milestone to his list of impressive accomplishments when he passed 60,000 career passing yards vs the Houston Texans. Stafford is now tied with former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan for second-fastest player to reach such a feat.
Entering Sunday, Stafford stood at 59,809 career passing yards, needing just 191 to hit the 60,000 total. He finished the game with 60,054 after throwing for 245 yards against a tough Houston secondary. Stafford becomes only the 10th quarterback in NFL history to reach 60,000 passing yards, placing him in the company of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan, and Aaron Rodgers. Also on that list is Hall of Famer Dan Marino, who Stafford now only needs 1,307 to pass for ninth all time. The Rams quarterback could realistically eclipse Ryan this season as well, who currently sits eighth all time with 62,792.
Stafford spoke after the game about what it means to join the 60k club, saying:
“The cool thing about playing quarterback, and my thought on it is, I can’t throw for any of those yards without every other ten players on the field, ten other guys, doing their jobs and so, it’s really cool I share it with so many people, and so many teammates and a bunch of coaches and, you know, it’s not ”oh, that was a cool year or a cool two years” I mean, it’s been a long time and a lot of people have sacrificed a lot to help me out along the way and I appreciate each and every single one of them. It’s an amazing thing and sure as hell glad that we did get a win, too.”
Despite a summer filled with questions after Stafford was forced to miss all of training camp with a back injury, the former Super Bowl Champion looked like his regular self during the Rams Week 1 victory over the Texans. Stafford was 21/29 for 245 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.
Currently Stafford sits with 60,054 yards, 378 touchdown passes, 191 interceptions while completing 63.5% of his passes, holding a career QB rating of 91.3. During his time with the Rams, Stafford is 5-2 in the playoffs with two divisional round appearances, a NFC conference championship and a Super Bowl LVI trophy. In that same span of games, Stafford threw for 2,088 yards, 15 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions.
Passing the 60,000 yard mark will only add to Stafford’s illustrious resume for a gold jacket, if and when he decides to hang it up. However, another deep run into the playoffs for Los Angeles in 2025 could solidify the case for his place among the all time greats in Canton, if it’s not already.
