The drought is finally over. Not only is the eleven year winless streak finally behind the Indianapolis Colts but they ended it convincingly by beating the brakes off the Miami Dolphins. Who knew that all it would take was Daniel Jones. After all the quarterbacks that have suited up for the season opener during this drought, Jones was the one to get it done. It wasn’t Jones alone, however, as so many others joined in on the party.
The defense showed up early and often with Cam Bynum picking off Tua Tagovailoa. That was followed up by a forced fumble by Kenny Moore and another pick, this time by Laiatu Latu who was dropped in coverage. The front was disruptive, and the revamped secondary kept the Dolphin receivers in check all afternoon. They didn’t allow the Dolphins to get much offensive rhythm at all until garbage time. Lou Anarumo pressed all the right buttons to keep them off balance and his defense humming.
One the other side, are we inducting Tyler Warren into the Ring of Honor yet? Ok, obviously early, but he was incredibly impressive in his rookie debut. He made catches all over the field and even played fullback at one point to pick up a first down. Jones and all the receivers were involved in the action as well. Michael Pittman Jr. returned to form and while Jonathan Taylor didn’t have his best game ever, he was solid. Jones is the story though. He had a career high in yards in the first quarter. He did more than manage the game. He took control and kept his foot on the opponent all day picking up two rushing touchdowns and throwing for another.
The Colts finally won a week one game. Seems weird to write, but here we are. No 0-1 hole to climb out of. No questions of how’d it all go wrong. No early season ground to make up out of the gate. Colts fans can finally enjoy the opening weekend with a win.
