- WR Brenen Thompson was the star of Saturday night: Thompson hauled in two long touchdown passes of 47-plus yards from Blake Shapen — including the game-winner with just 30 seconds left — to lift Mississippi State past Arizona State.
- QB Beau Pribula continues his strong start: The Penn State transfer has been a near-perfect fit in Missouri’s offense, already posting two games with PFF grades north of 87.0. On Saturday, Pribula delivered his best performance yet, carving up a strong Kansas team for a career-high 334 yards and three touchdowns while earning an elite 91.9 passing grade.

Week 2 delivered plenty of storylines across college football — from Oklahoma and Jackson Mateer looking every bit ready for SEC competition to Bryce Underwood’s first signs of true freshman growing pains. Arizona State’s offense clearly isn’t the same without Cam Skattebo, while USF and UNLV have emerged as the biggest challengers for the G5 playoff spot. And in Gainesville, Billy Napier might already be back on the hot seat after Florida’s stunning home loss to USF.
Here’s a look at the players who earned a spot on PFF’s Week 2 Team of the Week.

Offensive player of the week: WR Brenen Thompson, Mississippi State Bulldogs
Brenan Thompson was the star of Saturday night, hauling in two long touchdown passes of 47-plus yards from Blake Shapen — including the game-winner with just 30 seconds left — to lift Mississippi State past Arizona State. It marked the Bulldogs’ first home win over a ranked non-conference opponent since 1991, a massive moment for a program coming off a 2-10 season.
Thompson, billed as one of the fastest players in college football with sub-4.4 speed, looked every bit the part as no Sun Devil defender could stay with him. He finished the night with six catches for 133 yards, cementing himself as a true breakout weapon in the Bulldogs’ offense.
Defensive player of the week: Collin Matteson, Army Black Knights
Collin Matteson was arguably the best player on the field in Army’s huge road win over Kansas State on Saturday night. He sealed the game with an interception off Avery Johnson, added three more pass breakups and held Johnson to a 5.2 passer rating when targeted. Matteson also chipped in four tackles and finished with an 84.0 overall PFF grade, highlighted by an 88.9 coverage grade that underscored his dominance in the secondary.
Offensive line of the Week: Florida Gators
Entering the season, Florida was expected to have one of the nation’s top offensive lines, anchored by Jake Slaughter and Austin Barber. That strength showed on Saturday, as the unit earned a 95.4 pass-blocking grade and allowed only two pressures all game. Even in a disappointing loss, the Gators’ front gave D.J. Lagway plenty of time to operate, living up to its billing as one of college football’s elite lines.
Quarterback of the Week: Beau Pribula, Missouri Tigers
The Penn State transfer has been a near-perfect fit in Missouri’s offense, already posting two games with PFF grades north of 87.0. On Saturday, Pribula delivered his best performance yet, carving up a strong Kansas team for a career-high 334 yards and three touchdowns while earning an elite 91.9 passing grade. Once known primarily as a rushing threat at Penn State, he ran for just 19 yards in this one — instead thriving as a pocket passer with three big-time throws and a 127.5 passer rating in a signature win for the Tigers.
Run defender of the week: LB Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech Red Raiders
You can’t do much better than a 99.4 run-defense grade on 36 snaps. That’s what six tackles, five run stops and a forced fumble will earn you. Rodriguez has been one of the top linebackers in college football in recent years, and he showed why again on Saturday, earning a 92.1 overall PFF grade. His season run-defense grade now sits at an elite 97.0 — the highest mark in the nation.
Pass rusher of the week: ED Clev Lubin, Louisville Cardinals
Clev Lubin made the pivotal play in Louisville’s Friday night win over James Madison, a game that was far closer than the final score suggests. In the fourth quarter, Lubin forced a fumble in the end zone that was recovered for a touchdown — a swing that likely saved the Cardinals from an upset loss. He also filled the stat sheet with seven tackles, four pressures, and two sacks, earning an 88.2 overall PFF grade for the night.
Coverage defender of the week: CB Ashton Hampton, Clemson Tigers
Ashton Hampton’s play in the secondary proved more pivotal than Clemson fans would have preferred in Saturday’s narrow win. The Tigers trailed Troy 16-3 at halftime before storming back for an 11-point victory, sparked by Hampton’s crucial third-quarter interception that flipped momentum and set up the go-ahead score. From that point forward, Clemson’s secondary locked down and didn’t allow another point. Hampton finished the day with an 81.0 coverage grade, anchoring a comeback effort that nearly slipped away.
