Giants news, 9/4: Andrew Thomas, Deonte Banks, Dru Phillips, more headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

These are Giants’ key storylines for fascinating 2025 season | NJ.com

Weapons other than Malik Nabers: Everyone knows that Nabers will be a huge part of the Giants’ offense, as he was in 2024, when he excelled as a rookie. But Nabers’ production ultimately mattered little in a disastrous season. The Giants this past offseason did not make any significant additions at wide receiver. So they’ll run it back with Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt as complementary pieces to Nabers. Second-year tight end Theo Johnson remains unproven. And can running back Tyrone Tracy build on his solid 2024 season, while also cutting down on fumbles? Lots of potential issues here.

Russell Wilson era for NY Giants arrives with undeniable question: How long will it last?| The Record

The New York Giants can’t wait to see how Russell Wilson will change their offense, having brought a much-needed infusion of steadiness and conviction at quarterback.

The rest of the NFL – at least most of the league anyway – is waiting to pontificate on what will happen next if and when Wilson struggles on the field when the lights go on and the games actually count.

Presser Points: Takeaways from Coach Brian Daboll | Giants.com

Asked about having packages for multiple quarterbacks, Daboll said every situation and year is different. “We’ll see how it goes. … We’ll do what we think is best.”

Expectations for Giants brass should be crystal clear in Year 4: It’s win or go home | The Athletic

That’s fine because the expectations should be clear: This team needs to WIN. Now, there isn’t a stated playoff mandate from ownership, nor is there a magic number of wins that will ensure a fifth season for this regime. However, Schoen and Daboll are fortunate that they were granted a fourth season. It would be nearly impossible to survive a third straight season of double-digit losses.

This isn’t the time for excuses about injuries, a tough schedule or a young roster. It’s completely fair and reasonable to expect a regime to be a contender in its fourth season.

2025 NFL Trade Block Big Board Entering Week 1 | Bleacher Report

10. Evan Neal Projected Trade Value: Conditional 2026 6th-Round Pick. Given how far Neal’s stock has fallen, he isn’t likely to carry a substantial cost. Expect him to command a bit more than the conditional 2027 seventh-round pick the Atlanta Falcons recently got for tackle Michael Jerrell, though. Potential Suitors: Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts

4. Kayvon Thibodeaux, Edge, New York Giants. Projected Trade Value: 2026 2nd-Round Pick. Thibodeaux hasn’t quite been the game-wrecker New York thought it was getting at fifth overall in 2022. However, he’s still a 24-year-old edge-rusher who has averaged seven sacks per season and is under contract for two more years. Thibodeaux won’t net the Giants anything close to what Dallas got for Parsons, but a high Day-2 selection is a reasonable expectation. Potential Suitors: Detroit Lions, New England Patriots

2025 New York Giants prediction: Why Tyrone Tracy Jr. could have a big season | New York Post

Over the Giants’ final 13 games, Tracy averaged 62.3 yards on the ground per game and 4.5 yards per carry. If Tracy can hit those averages over a full season, he’d go well over 1,000 rushing yards – and blow out his rushing yard prop for the season, which is sitting at around 725 yards depending on the sportsbook.

FOX’s Kevin Burkhardt: Giants running game a key this Sunday

3. Brian Daboll, New York Giants. His job situation is one of the more interesting in the NFL. There was a case to fire him after the Giants went 3-14 last season, dropping his three-year record to 18-32-1, but co-owner John Mara showed the kind of patience he hasn’t displayed much in the last decade. The Giants then went out and got Daboll the kind of quality quarterback he needs in veteran Russell Wilson, but they’ll be fighting an uphill battle playing one of the toughest schedules in the league. Here’s the most complicating part, though: Daboll’s fate might be more tied to the development of rookie QB Jaxson Dart, who looked good in preseason but might not play until late in the season, if at all. Daboll needs to win, so he won’t rush Dart. But how much losing can he survive, even if Dart shows promise? Mara could face a very complicated decision at the end of the year.

NFL Hope-O-Meter 2025 results: Broncos, Eagles fans are optimistic, Cowboys not so much | The Athletic

19. New York Giants: 70.0 percent optimism

Optimist: Abdul Carter and upgrades throughout the defense. The offense being run by a competent QB. And a future with Jaxson Dart. There seems to be a different attitude forming in the building. I am not expecting to make the playoffs, or for the team to be good, but I am optimistic about Jaxson Dart and the potential of having a good defense. There’s a part of me that thinks the Giants could have an elite defense and slide into the 7-seed in a weaker NFC. Maybe I’m crazy. That’s the peak of my optimism.

This week’s opponent

Dan Quinn: I don’t want to replicate last year, I want to build off of it | Hog Haven

Head coach Dan Quinn spoke to the media before practice started and talked about establishing the team’s identity, and said it takes more than one year. Jayden Daniels is a big part of the Commanders’ identity, and Quinn said his second-year QB has a “rare focus about him” and the best of the best have that.

Josh Conerly ‘earned’ right to be starting RT | Commanders.com

Rookie offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. is set to make his professional debut as a starter when the Commanders kick off their 2025 season against the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium. It’s a sign of how confident the team has become in Conerly, regarded as one of the best pass protectors in last year’s draft, and while he is not even 22 years old, they believe he is ready for a serious role now.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is not on the injury report after spending time on the physically unable to perform list due to an ankle issue that has cleared up since he signed a contract extension with the team last month. WR Noah Brown has been out with a knee injury, but he was able to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday. Cornerback Jonathan Jones (hamstring) and defensive end Dorance Armstrong (knee) joined Brown in the limited category.
