Happy opening day Eagles fans! The title defense starts today. For tonight’s match up against the Micah Parson-less Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles will still need their best. After all, it wouldn’t be an NFC East showdown without some hi-jinx. As for the Eagles rookies, here is what to keep a close eye on.
Much has been made about Jihaad Campbell taking huge strides this summer and he’s flashed big time in limited preseason play. Now the bright lights will be shining and each snap will matter even more. Campbell’s skill set lends itself to being a defensive chess piece for Vic Fangio to move around between playing off-ball and on the edge. How flexible will Campbell be? The Eagles need to prove they can get pass rush from guys not named Jalen Carter and Campbell’s speed is one of the many bullets in the defense’s gun.
How does Andrew Mukuba contribute?
Andrew Mukuba is set to have some sort of role with the defense, even if it’s not immediately as a full-time starter next to Reed Blankenship. The Cowboys, for all their woes, should still have an explosive passing game. Not only is Dak Prescott healthy, but he now has George Pickens to stretch the field and CeeDee Lamb is still one of the best players in the NFL. The Cowboys can go long on any given pass play and will test Mukuba’s inexperience sooner than later.
Is there any room for Ty Robinson on the game day rotation yet?
I was underwhelmed by Ty Robinson’s preseason performance but I’d be remiss to dismiss him entirely. He is a highly athletic player on a defensive line looking to rotate players a lot. While Robinson cannot relied on for run defense, it is possible we see the former Cornhusker on third and long. That is, if he’s even active at all.
