NFL Week 1 power rankings: Giants might be better, but not good enough

Let’s look at where the New York Giants in Week 1 NFL power rankings. HINT: It’s not good.

NFL.com (Edholm) — No. 27

I’m starting to see the path back to redemption. Whether the Giants get to the end of that path this season or not, I don’t know, and there’s certainly major pressure on Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen to deliver wins after going 9-25 the past two seasons. This rookie class has a chance to be a good one right away, with Jaxson Dart’s play able to swing it toward greatness if he becomes successful. Right now, it’s Russell Wilson’s shot, and the Giants face a pretty nasty schedule, but there’s some real promise in a cohering offensive line (pending Andrew Thomas’ health) and a defense that should be able to hang with most teams. I still don’t know how the G-Men are going to finish over .500, yet I am preparing myself to be mildly surprised by their 2025 showing.

That’s called hedging your bet.

CBS Sports (Prisco) — No. 29

How long do they wait to go to Jaxson Dart? Russell Wilson will start the season, but he won’t be there for long, unless he lights it up.

Pro Football Talk — No. 30

The sooner they turn the page to Jaxson Dart, the better off they’ll be.

For The Win — No. 25

Hey, Jaxson Dart seems like he can kind of sling the rock! Oh, right, no one ever really doubted whether he had the talent. It was more about his capacity to process, digest, and execute a complicated NFL playbook. Well, while Dart tries to figure that out, the Giants’ defensive front featuring Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Brian Burns should at least be worth the price of admission for woeful Big Blue.

Bleacher Report — No. 29

The New York Giants’ entire season will be built around the team’s timetable for first-round quarterback Jaxson Dart to enter the starting lineup.

Team brass has been adamant veteran Russell Wilson is the starter and the coaching staff will continue with Dart’s development.

Anyone looking at the situation understands there’s no future with Wilson behind center. He’s a stopgap that didn’t work in Denver with the Broncos or as part of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Dart thrilled throughout the preseason. He looked far more ready for the pro game than expected. To be fair, preseason is the key word when discussing what’s been seen to date. The Giants don’t want to rush him into the lineup, which is understandable.

At the same time, the G-Men now have some exciting young pieces to build around in Malik Nabers, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Abdul Carter. Eventually, they have to see if Dart is worthy of being another building block.

Sporting News — No. 29

The Giants will need to turn the page from Russell Wilson to rookie Jaxson Dart at some point, but fundamental issues may keep Brian Daboll from getting the offensive and team results he needs to save his job.

USA Today (Davis) — No. 26

If the NFL crowned preseason champs, you’re probably looking at ‘em. Alas. But nevertheless, even though it may not be reflected much in the 2025 win column, plenty of good feels around this team − primarily generated by rookie QB Jaxson Dart and LB Abdul Carter. Factor in WR Malik Nabers, and the Giants’ may just have the league’s premier trio of youngsters … at least based on what we saw in their dominant August. In a Parsons-less NFC East, maybe Big Blue has a legit shot at third place.

ESPN (Clay) — No. 25

The Giants have clear weak spots, but there’s potential for them to outperform this ranking. The defense is quietly very good on paper after the additions of cornerback Paulson Adebo, safety Jevon Holland and first-round edge rusher Abdul Carter to a group that already included DT Dexter Lawrence II, edge Brian Burns and LB Bobby Okereke. The offense, led by WR Malik Nabers, has questions along the line, but competent QB play from Russell Wilson or first-round pick Jaxson Dart can get this team into the wild-card discussion.

The Athletic — No. 30

Russell Wilson will start Sunday at quarterback, but his clock may be ticking by the time Monday arrives. Rookie Jaxson Dart, the 25th pick, was 32-for-47 for 372 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the preseason. Wilson will be feeling Dart’s presence the moment he struggles, which could come early against this schedule.
