The Las Vegas Raiders put together their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, with Thomas Harper making the roster. That all changed two days later when the coaching staff and the front office decided to go in a different direction. They released Harper and picked up Tristin McCollum.
Harper finished the season strong in 2024, but an injury didn’t allow him to display his abilities in training camp. The former Notre Dame defensive back’s film was recognized by one team in the league. The Detroit Lions put in a waiver claim for Thomas Harper, and he will join the reigning NFC North champions.
Why the Raiders replaced Harper with a safety is a position that lacks depth. Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Polo-Mao lead it, but Pete Carroll has planned for Chinn to play in the slot. On inevitable downs, that leaves a talent deficiency that will be hard to overcome. It is a worry for most fans as the position continues to lose talent.
