To learn more about Rico Payton, the cornerback awarded to the New York Giants on waivers from the New Orleans Saints, we turned to the folks at SB Nation’s Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles. Jason Watson answered our ‘5 questions’ about Payton.
1. Why didn’t the Saints keep him on their 53-man roster?
Jason: While Payton played beyond expectations primarily within the Saints’ special teams units in 2024, he ultimately became the odd man out in Kellen Moore’s 53-man group after having a poor preseason. The nagging injury that has gotten him placed on IR was also a potential concern. Payton is a great young player with potential to be solid in the league, but the Saints obviously felt more confidence in fourth-round draft pick, Quincy Riley, and the development of second-year players, Kool-Aid McKinstry and Rejzohn Wright.
2. Is the fan base unhappy that he slipped away?
Jason: Special teams players are always fan favorites down in New Orleans. They typically take advantage of the opportunities they’re given and will have more to play for in down years, which fans can appreciate. Payton is no different. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the fanbase is upset by his departure, but maybe more shocked after his production in 2024. Many have acknowledged their confidence in the CB room that was kept, but know there was more to unlock with Rico.
3. What is your scouting report on his strengths/weaknesses?
Jason: Payton has a knack for finding the football, hence his play in special teams. Pair along his speed and athleticism, and you’ve got a quality CB that could be a better piece in weaker defensive back groupings. I think his inconsistency or minimal tape make his bad moments that much worse. If he can bounce back from the injury currently sidelining him, Rico has the ability to make some progress in the Big Apple.
4. Is there a particular highlight or something you will remember about his time with New Orleans?
Jason: The one play that will always keep Rico in my memory is last season’s preseason finale versus the Tennessee Titans. He came with a hard, untouched blitz from the left side and just obliterated QB Malik Willis. Although the Saints would go on to lose the game, that felt like a play that cemented Payton’s spot within the Saints’ roster as a strong gunner.
5. Can he become more than a special teams player and emergency fill-in at cornerback?
Jason: As touched on before, Payton can certainly be a key role player for the right organization in the right environment. Only time will tell, but I believe Payton will carve out a spot as more of a CB than just the “special teams guy” before his time in the league is up.
Payton will begin his Giants’ tenure on IR, but it’s likely we see him on the active roster soon.
Thanks to Jason for the insight!
