The Los Angeles Rams put out their initial 53-man roster, and it has been met with much fanfare, but there has also been some controversy as the Rams cut Chris Paul Jr. after trading away two picks in the latest NFL draft to get him.
The draft compensation wasn’t outrageous, L.A. sent picks 201 and 202 to the Minnesota Vikings, for the chance to move up to pick 172 and grab Paul out of Ole Miss. Still, it’s notable when a team clearly covets a player, only to end up letting them go.
For those who follow Turf Show Times, Paul’s departure shouldn’t be totally out of left field as Blaine Grisak shared that it would be surprising, but not impossible for Paul to find himself cut, and that’s what happened.
As it stands, the Rams will move forward with Nate Landman, Omar Speights, Shaun Dolac and Troy Reeder at the linebacking position, and it’s not hard to find a number of fans upset about the release of Paul, nor are people sure that Reeder is worth keeping over the younger backer (check YouTube comments here), but Paul had been injured for parts of this training camp, McVay said that the team went with who they felt were the best linebackers for the team, so Paul failed to secure a spot.
After trading up for the player, one would’ve thought the last thing the Rams wanted to do was admit a mistake and let him go, but sometimes it’s better for a team to move on from a player early, than hold on to a player too long.
Paul will now go through the waiver process, and find himself a new NFL team, or a potential practice squad spot to fill, which could be in L.A.
His journey through the NFL isn’t necessarily over, yet.
