The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving Tristin McCollum, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.
This news comes one day after McCollum made the team’s initial 53-man roster as the fourth safety behind Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, and Andrew Mukuba.
McCollum’s departure might signal that the team isn’t too worried about the hamstring injury Mukuba suffered last week. And/or it could mean that the team is looking to add another safety. Former Eagles starter Marcus Epps is notably available.
If McCollum doesn’t get claimed off waivers, the Eagles will probably have interest in signing him to their practice squad. At that point, he’ll be a prime candidate to be temporarily elevated to the game day roster early in the season. If McCollum isn’t back and the Eagles don’t sign a fourth safety to the roster, Andre’ Sam is a prime candidate to be temporarily elevated from the practice squad instead.
Schefter’s tweet framed the Eagles waiving McCollum as a move to make room for waiver claim Willie Lampkin on their roster. But the Eagles had already created a spot by reportedly waiving Trevor Keegan earlier on Wednesday.
The roster move that was reported after both Keegan’s dismissal and Lampkin’s arrival was the re-signing of veteran long snapper Charley Hughlett. The Eagles didn’t keep him on their initial 53-man roster but it was believed they’d either quickly re-sign him to the roster or practice squad.
