The Miami Dolphins were awarded the rights to cornerback Julius Brents off waivers on Wednesday. Brents was among the final roster cuts by the Indianapolis Colts, with Miami assuming his contract and adding him to their 53-man roster. No corresponding move to create roster space was announced as of publication.
Brents was a second-round pick by the Colts in 2023, coming out of Kansas State. He appeared in nine games as a rookie, starting eight times, and recorded 43 tackles, six passes defensed, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. In 2024, Brents played the first two weeks, recording seven tackles before a knee injury ended his season.
Miami is expected to be aggressive with adding cornerbacks to the 53-man roster and the practice squad on Wednesday. Earlier in the day they announced the signing of veteran free agent Rasul Douglas, while Cam Smith was placed on the non-football injury list. The Dolphins need depth at cornerback, and the addition of Brents gives them a highly-drafted prospect with starting experience who may need time to fully recover from his previous injury and could be asked to work down on the depth chart initially this season.
As waiver claims are completed, teams can begin to sign their practice squad players. Those reports will likely start shortly.
