The Eagles had to make some tough decisions ahead of the league’s roster deadline on Tuesday, and while none of the players released by Philadelphia were claimed off waivers, at least one is signing elsewhere. Former Eagles draft pick Ainias Smith is planning to sign with the Panthers for a spot on the practice squad.
It’s interesting that Smith isn’t returning to Philly. He was in a tight battle for one of the receiver spots on the active roster, and handled a lot of special teams duties to give him an edge. It was suggested that the Eagles might release Smith in order to bring him back to the practice squad, so either Howie Roseman didn’t make him an offer to return, or the WR opted to go to a less crowded (and talented) situation.
The Eagles are still working to fill their practice squad, and despite having to put Johnny Wilson on season-ending IR, the team still has A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, John Metchie, and Darius Cooper on the active roster. If they are looking to bring someone back on the practice squad, Terrace Marshall caught some attention early on in training camp before ultimately being released.
