According to the IndyStar’s Joel A. Erickson, the Indianapolis Colts have a planned roster move in place for injured young linebacker Jaylon Carlies by placing him on injured reserve soon with a designation to return:
While the 2nd-year linebacker has successfully returned from offseason shoulder surgery, he’s now recovering from an ankle injury he apparently suffered in the preseason finale last weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals—having made 2 solo tackles during the Week 3 exhibition.
The former Colts’ 2024 5th round pick had a promising start to his pro career last year, recording 36 tackles (24 solo), a sack, and a pass defensed during 10 games (6 starts). Most impressively, the rookie linebacker really stood out in pass coverage in subpackages, having earned a +83.1 coverage grade by PFF—albeit in limited action. He missed 7 games during his rookie year with a broken fibula.
Carlies was initially projected to be the starting ‘Will’ alongside returning All-Pro linebacker Zaire Franklin, but had a bit of a slow start to camp returning from offseason surgery, and Cameron McGrone is now the starter.
Whether that continues upon Carlies’ return from an expected short-term injured reserve stint, remains to be seen. However, he should be an asset in pass coverage for the Colts defense once he’s back on the football field regardless, even if just utilized situationally.
