The first reported Detroit Lions roster cut has leaked. According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are releasing linebacker Anthony Pittman.
Pittman first joined the Lions way back in 2019 as an undrafted player out of Wayne State. He spent the next four seasons with the Lions, establishing himself as one of the more valuable players on their special teams units over that span. In 2024, Pittman gambled on himself—seeking out a defensive role with the Washington Commanders. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the cut for Washington and would end up with the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad early in the season.
But when the Lions were going through a ton of injuries at linebacker late last season, they brought Pittman back, and he made three appearances for the team down the stretch.
After re-signing with the Lions this offseason, Pittman entered 2025 with significant competition at linebacker. Not only were the Lions returning their top four linebackers, but they also added special teams ace Grant Stuard and veteran Zach Cunningham to the room. While Pittman still remains a strong special teamer, the Lions simply were a bit too stacked at the linebacker position this year.
Because Pittman has four accrued seasons, he will not be subject to the waiver wire and can sign with any team once he is officially released. That could also make him a candidate to return to the Lions either on their practice squad or if another spot on the 53-man roster opens up.
