The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving third-year cornerback Eli Ricks as part of their roster cuts, according to a report from the Inquirer’s Jeff McLane.
Ricks’ departure isn’t surprising but it is noteworthy.
Once upon a time, Ricks seemed like a promising undrafted rookie free agent signing. He shined during his NFL first preseason with an interception returned for a touchdown (pick six Ricks) and four pass breakups. This success helped him make the 53-man roster, where he contributed 301 defensive snaps (mostly as a fill-in nickel cornerback option) and 212 special teams snaps in 2023.
Ricks did not show signs of progress from Year 1 to Year 2. Despite this, the Eagles kept him as a seventh cornerback for the entirety of 2024 anyway. He finished last year with just 14 defensive snaps played and 51 special teams snaps played.
One could argue Ricks had a better training camp this year than he did last year. But the team clearly wasn’t impressed with what they saw. Ricks never entered the starting cornerback competition. Rather, he was demoted once the Eagles traded for Jakorian Bennett.
And now Ricks is subject to waivers. We’ll see if another team claims the 23-year-old or not. Perhaps he’ll remain in Philly on the Eagles’ practice squad.
