Howie Roseman simply can’t stop making trades ahead 0f 2025 NFL roster cuts.

In his third deal of the day, the Philadelphia Eagles struck a deal with the Green Bay Packers (booooooo).

Here are the terms:

EAGLES RECEIVE: 2027 sixth-round pick

PACKERS RECEIVE: OL Darian Kinnard

The Eagles surrendered their 2027 seventh-round pick to the Minnesota Vikings in the trade to acquire quarterback Sam Howell earlier on Sunday, so, this move helps to offset the cost there to some extent.

That being said, this trade is a bit of a surprise … for multiple reasons.

  1. I’d wager that most 53-man roster predictions had Kinnard making the team. Philly’s backup offensive linemen generally didn’t perform well this summer but Kinnard seemed to be one of the better performers from that group. Following Landon Dickerson’s injury, there was a day in practice where the Eagles actually gave Kinnard some first-team left guard reps, though the bulk of those went to Brett Toth.
  2. How could the Eagles possibly trade their good luck charm?! Kinnard has been in the NFL for three seasons. He’s won a Super Bowl in all three of them (two with the Kansas City Chiefs, one with the Eagles). Does correlation equal causation? No, of course not. But why tempt fate here? Now the Packers are totally winning Super Bowl LX.

Of course, the rational explanation here is that the Eagles just didn’t value Kinnard very highly. He became more expendable with the team managing to reacquire Fred Johnson in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Getting some value for a player they either would’ve cut or stashed away on the bench makes sense.

The Eagles obviously have their five offensive line starters in Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson (once he’s healthy), Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, and Lane Johnson. Fred Johnson is the swing tackle. Matt Pryor seems like a good bet to provide guard depth and he can play tackle in a pinch. Drew Kendall showed promise and could be the top backup center option (unless the Eagles opt to shift Dickerson to the pivot instead).

The Kinnard trade could be a good sign for Brett Toth’s chances of making the roster. Maybe it also signs the Eagles are trying to keep both Myles Hinton and Cameron Williams under team control?

We’ll see when the Eagles trim their roster down to 53 players before Tuesday’s 4:00 PM Eastern deadline.
