Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee suffered a fractured thumb during the team’s Monday training camp practice last week, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport adds that McKee’s injury “will bring his availability for Week 1 in question.” However, The Athletic’s Brooks Kubena reports that McKee is NOT expected to go on injured reserve (and thus automatically miss at least four games).
The Eagles had been listing McKee on their injury report with a “finger” designation and Nick Sirianni was vague about exactly what was going with him. So, this is the first time we have clarity on McKee’s situation.
McKee’s fractured thumb is said to “not [be] a major injury” since “it’s just the top of the thumb.” Rapoport says that “the Sam Howell trade likely would’ve happened anyway.”
Whether that last part is true or not, the reality is that the Eagles do have Howell now and he figures to back up Jalen Hurts until McKee is healthy enough to return. At that point, Howell will serve as the emergency third quarterback on game day.
