The Los Angeles Rams lost to the Cleveland Browns by a score of 19-17 in the final preseason game of the year. The Browns started some of their best players including expected starting quarterback for Week 1, Joe Flacco. Whereas the Rams went ahead with Dresser Winn as they let Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett relax for the day.
Winn had a nice day, Tru Edwards made a great catch, Tanner Ingle starred on defense.
In the final moments, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski pulled fourth-string quarterback Shedeur Sanders from the game so that Cleveland could have a better chance at winning the game. Down 17-16, fifth-stringer Tyler Huntley drove the Browns into field goal range for the game-winning kick. Sanders was not happy with coaches and his place on Cleveland’s roster hangs in the balance.
The Browns defense gave Winn and L.A.’s offense real challenges as the Rams struggled to move the ball most of the day, whereas Cleveland scored at important times, including a touchdown right before halftime. Even so, the Rams held Joe Flacco’s first-string offense to 7 points on three drives. Not bad for backups!
The Rams played their backups against starters and the backups held up by keeping the game within reach, but they weren’t able to do enough to get the Rams to 3-0 on the preseason. Instead, the Rams went 2-1 and none of that will matter after Labor Day when the real official games begin, and we start accounting for real records with games that really matter.
In this contest, one team was trying to figure out where they are going, while the other team knows where they are headed.
I’ll let you figure out which team is which.
