Giants news, 8/22: Giants finish preseason, Abdul Carter, Brian Daboll, more headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

2025 NFL season: Ranking all 32 teams by watchability | ESPN.com

22. New York Giants. When Russell Wilson is taking more late-career dropbacks in hopes that his early-career athleticism will suddenly return, I’ll be tuned in elsewhere. But they get the rookie quarterback bump if and when Jaxson Dart gets on the field and a star player bump with Malik Nabers (though much of his production unfortunately comes in the form of speed outs and curls that aren’t as fun to watch).

The most entertaining part of this franchise will be the defense, specifically the pass rush. I will be glued to my seat in Week 1 when Abdul Carter joins Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodea/ux for his first third-and-long opportunity. If that group is all we hope it will be, I’ll be in the same seat for all subsequent weeks.

Predicting Giants’ initial 53-man roster after preseason finale vs. Patriots | New York Daily News

Wide receiver (7): Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, Beaux Collins (rookie), Jalin Hyatt, Lil’ Jordan Humphrey, Ihmir Smith-Marsette

Collins, the rookie from Notre Dame, goes from being undrafted to a roster lock. Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s season-ending torn Achilles removes a receiver from the fold and clears a spot for Miller, the running back, to slide in. Picking between slot receiver Montrell Washington and Humphrey is tough. The Giants should have competition for Robinson in the slot, but Humphrey offers veteran savvy and run blocking. So Washington, Gunner Olszewski, Dalen Cambre and Juice Wells Jr. all have a chance to end up on the practice squad.

In the age-old battle of weighing production against potential, the Giants could choose to believe that a breakout still is near for 2023 third-round pick Jalin Hyatt.

2025 NFL defensive rookies: Best and worst case for 17 players | NFL.com

Best-case scenario: Carter lives up to the hype— and then some— becoming the first rookie to post double-digit sacks since his fellow former Penn State star, Micah Parsons. Comps to Parsons appear to be legit, as Carter proves he’s one of the most talented and tenacious defensive players in the league.

Where Does Every NFL Defense Rank for 2025? | The Ringer

18. New York Giants. What expectations are fair for Abdul Carter? If we look at all the rookie pass rushers who have been drafted in the top five since 2000, the average production is 5.7 sacks across a season. Only five—Julius Peppers, Bradley Chubb, Von Miller, Joey Bosa, and Ndamukong Suh—produced double-digit sacks as rookies. Could Carter join that group? Sure! But it’s not the most likely scenario.

Having said that, there’s obvious upside with this pass rush, given that Carter is joining a group that includes Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns. The Giants will need that group to be dominant because of the questions they have at cornerback. This was a defense that finished 28th in DVOA last season. A leap to competency seems reasonable.

1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Propose Before The 2025 Season | Bleacher Report

New York Giants: Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux for Chicago Bears 2026 third- and fifth-round picks. While New York picked up Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option earlier in the offseason and could build around him with an extension, he’s arguably the top trade chip Schoen has to work with right now. Dealing the 24-year-old would land the team picks it can use to further its rebuilding efforts with, a tantalizing proposition given the amount of holes Big Blue still has on the roster.

Is Giants preseason finale the last we’ll see of Jaxson Dart this year? | The Athletic

As for changes to practices, Daboll pushed players harder, as four of the Giants’ 15 camp practices topped the two-hour mark. They went over two hours just twice in 18 camp practices last year.

The Giants conducted three fewer camp practices this year mainly because the Thursday finale made for a short week. The Giants were in full pads for eight of their 15 practices this camp. That matches their padded practice total from last year in 18 practices.

4. Brian Daboll. This season is the all-in gambit for both Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen. This is a market which doesn’t necessarily demand excellence, but it asks for a hell of a lot better than what the Giants have put on the field.

Everything hinges on Jaxson Dart this year. He will take over the starting job eventually, because we’ve all seen Russell Wilson at this point in his career — with Daboll and Shoen going out on a limb by making Dart a first round pick. It will require not necessarily making the playoffs or even contending, but showing the fanbase (and ownership) that the football team is headed in the right direction. That makes Daboll’s future shaky, especially with the numerous holes this roster has.

Giants’ risky quarterback experiment couldn’t have worked out any better | New York Post

The Giants put together a QB room that was easy to mock. So far, it’s been great. “Without getting too much into it, meetings are fun. They can banter back and forth with me, with them, with each other. They know when it’s time to be serious and work.”

Could Giants QB have UFC career after NFL? ‘Really trying to fight people in the locker room’ | NJ.com

When asked if Winston was as animated and colorful as he appeared in videos on social media, Tyrone Tracy Jr. said Winston does crazy stuff every day.

“We had a UFC fighter come to our practice and she gave him some gloves and signed them and everything,” Tracy said. “Jameis comes in the locker room and starts like doing UFC-like kicks and fights with the gloves on. He’s really trying to fight people in the locker room, showing us how he kicks and everything. I promise you, I thought I was an outgoing person until I met him. He’s literally one of one. He’s a great person and a very down-to-earth guy.”

NFL Projection Model, NFC win totals: How wide is gap between Eagles and everyone else? | The Athletic

Austin Mock uses his NFL projection model to provide an early look at what to expect from the NFC this season. The Giants are projected to win 5.6 games.

Lastly, the Giants round out the division. Though we likely won’t see him to start the season, Jaxson Dart is the future at quarterback, and while throwing to star receiver Malik Nabers should make his life easier, I don’t have high hopes for this offense, no matter who is playing QB. However, I do think the defense, especially the line, could make offenses dread facing the Giants this season. Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and first-round pick Abdul Carter is about as good as it gets rushing the passer.

New York Giants: WR Wan’Dale Robinson. The Giants aren’t exactly known as a downfield team, but that is likely to change in 2025. With quarterback Russell Wilson under center, the offense will almost assuredly be more aggressive this season, and that means a potential uptick in production for wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson. Not only will offensive coordinator Mike Kafka scheme Robinson into more space this season, but the Giants have shown throughout training camp that he will be more involved over the middle of the field, with shots also being sent his way down the field.
