The New York Giants dismantled the New York Jets 31-12 on Saturday in what used to be referred to as the Snoopy Bowl. The Giants had more than 425 yards of offense. Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jaxson Dart had over 100 yards passing. Even Tommy DeVito had a few nice throws in his limited snaps. He found Dalen Cambre for 11 yards after connecting with Jordan Bly for 41 yards. However, his next throw was an interception late in the fourth quarter.
The Jets’ first-team offense was able to run the football, but Justin Fields completed one of five passes for four yards. Here are the five plays, or sequence of plays, that best define the Giants’ 31-12 victory over the Jets.
Jaxson Dart’s drive!
The rookie quarterback looked impressive on his nine-play, 75-yard drive that was concluded by this Greg Dulcich touchdown for 20 yards:
Dart converted two third-and-4 situations; one was a well-timed screen pass to Dante “Turbo” Miller for 12 yards, and the second was a short outside shot to Miller that Dart quickly processed out of Empty. Dart was confident, on-time, and displayed good overall arm-talent and zip on the touchdown drive.
He followed up this impressive drive with another touchdown. Dart worked the football down the field, finding his former teammate Antwane “Juice” Wells Jr. three times, twice on bubble RPOs. Again, he looked comfortable and poised. He finished the second touchdown drive with a quarterback sneak score. Dart looked clinical on both drives and one can understand why Brian Daboll seems giddy in practice when the young man continues to show his development. Here are some other plays from those drives:
Wilson MOON BALL!
Russell Wilson (3) dialed the clock back on this play-action deep shot to Beaux Collins (8):
After two consecutive runs, Mike Kafka called a deep – under center – play action shot to Collins, who outran his corner assignment and ran underneath Wilson’s pass, and beyond safety Andre Cisco (8). It was refreshing to see and was the best deep ball I’ve seen since Tyrod Taylor connected with Darius Slayton for an 80-yard touchdown against the Rams in 2023. This play went for 80 yards as well.
Moon Ball mishap
Wilson and Collins were not as lucky on the Giants third offensive drive. The duo were not on the same page off a play-action pass. Collins ran a post, Wilson threw it outside the numbers. This was the end result:
Miscommunications happen, especially with undrafted rookies who missed time in training camp. Still, I come away pleased that Wilson has an eye to target deep with the gumption to attack.
Screen game success!
For years, the Giants have struggled to get ANYTHING going in the screen game. The timing seemed off, the offensive line would go too far downfield, or a block was never made; however, in the preseason at least, the Giants have successfully hit several screen plays.
Jaxson Dart’s first pass was a 30-yard screen where he changed his arm angle to avoid the rush. Theo Johnson did the rest, stumbling through would-be tackle attempts for 30 yards:
Dante Miller caught three screens as well, which went for considerable gains. Miller finished with four catches for 43 yards. It’s great to see the team on the same page when executing these screen passes. Now it’s time to take that execution into the regular season.
Makari Paige interception
I wanted to include this interception because both Paige and Trace Ford (46) are undrafted players who have an uphill battle to crack the roster, but both are quality practice squad candidates.
