The Indianapolis Colts are at home to take on the Green Bay Packers for preseason, week 2, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EST.
The quarterback battle still rages on heading into the middle of August with both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones vying for the title of QB1, heading into the 2025 season. Neither man has pulled away from the other and while seemingly everyone has a preference, if we’re all being honest, neither quarterback has done enough to make anyone think 2025 will be a banner year for first year owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon. Week one saw Anthony Richardson look much better as a passer, his footwork and subsequently his ball placement, was generally better than what we saw from the 23 year old last season. Things were looking positive until Richardson misread or otherwise didn’t recognize that the pass rush the Baltimore Ravens defense sent his way was designed to stress their called five man protection scheme which, as designed, created a free rusher. Richardson was hot from his right side, seemingly didn’t know it, and took a massive shot from an unblocked defender that left the pinky on his throwing hand literally dangling by a thread. This is the best explanation I’ve seen of what happened on the play, Warner’s opinion differs from J.T. O’Sullivan (someone you should be following online if you want to learn more about football) a bit but both men have provided a ton of info about what happened and if you seek out either explanation I guarantee you’ll learn something. That injury would end his day and reinforce what should be everyone’s biggest concern about Anthony Richardson; his health.
Meanwhile Daniel Jones has been, well, Daniel Jones. Jones can lead your team to wins, it’s just going to be boring and the team around him has to be really good. When all the chips on the table and you need your quarterback to drive the field in the final minutes, Jones has never been someone any team has felt good about. But this Colts team, specifically the front office and coaching staff, are feeling the pressure to win and win now and Daniel Jones’ consistent, boring brand of checkdown football might be exactly what they feel they need, even if the ceiling is one-and-done in the playoffs with a journeyman 28 year old at the helm.
This preseason game could end up being the deciding factor in the direction of the entire 2025 Indianapolis Colts season. Do they go with the player, (that is just 23 years old and has less than a full season of starts under his belt) who still has tremendous potential, or do they go with the player with a limited ceiling but figures to be more consistent? Given what we’ve seen from both quarterbacks in the lead up to the 2025 season I think it’s fair to ask if it really matters who starts, but either way, after today we’ll know more than we did yesterday.
As always, go Colts!
