Other Giant observations
Mind games: How Jaxson Dart is excelling as a thinking man’s quarterback for the NY Giants | The Record
The most significant reason for Dart’s recent success: his instincts, an awareness of what is going to happen on the other side of the ball and the moments that call for the throws he knows he can make.
“When you have players that have instincts, which that’s a very important quality to have at any position, certainly at the quarterback position, those have to take over,” Daboll said. “You don’t want guys that are box thinkers. He’s got good vision. He’s got good awareness. There’s going to be times where, he’s a young player, that he gets tricked or maybe doesn’t do the thing you want him to do, and then you just go back and you correct it just like you would with any other player. But players that have good instincts, they can go out there and play fast and see it.”
Marcus Spears: Giants not a pushover
2025 NFL positional group rankings: Best, worst team units | ESPN.com
Edge rusher Unit to watch: New York Giants. The Giants have a strong case for the top spot in this category. Brian Burns sits seventh in the NFL with 54.5 sacks since entering the league in 2019, while Kayvon Thibodeaux ranks 21st with 17 over the past two seasons. And as if that’s not enough, New York used the No. 3 pick this year on Abdul Carter. It’s extremely rare for a team to have three first-round picks at the same position, but New York will certainly get creative in finding ways to keep all three busy this season.
CB Andru Phillips. Let’s take a dart throw at one of the Giants’ young secondary players who could make strides in 2025. Head coach Brian Daboll has already said he sees Phillips making a “big jump” in Year 2, and teammates have praised the slot corner’s upside. In 2024, Phillips showed potential as a run defender and generated a -7.2 target EPA — the best mark on the team, according to Next Gen Stats (min. 200 coverage snaps). Phillips’ aggressive, physical style plays well near the line of scrimmage. Stepping into a bigger role with a better understanding of the defense, the 23-year-old has the chance to grow into one of the better slot defenders in the NFC.
10 Giants players to watch vs Jets: Let’s try this again with Evan Neal, shall we? | The Record
Jalin Hyatt, WR. Whether Hyatt is on the field Saturday night is uncertain. I do know the conversation surrounding Hyatt has gone from his potential impact on this offense to the unknown of where he stands in the quest to make the team. This one is all over the place, and personally I would love to see Hyatt out there catching one deep ball from Russell Wilson or Jaxson Dart to reaffirm thoughts that he is here to stay.
Report: New York Giants’ Malik Nabers dealing with third ‘minor’ injury | USAToday.com
Nabers is not expected to play on Saturday night against the New York Jets, and it’s unclear when he will return. However, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that Nabers’ latest injury issue, which is neither his toe nor his shoulder, is “minor…It definitely doesn’t seem like it’s bad, but it’s another minor injury for Malik Nabers. Maybe it’s not serious now, but it’s certainly something when all these little knocks keep piling up — it does seem to be something we have to keep an eye on moving forward.”
Giants won’t have to pick a side with Paulson Adebo as top cornerback option | New York Post
If the Giants end up wanting Adebo to shadow receivers, something he noticeably did at times in a matchup with Garrett Wilson during a joint practice with the Jets, he’d be open to that change.
“It was just kind of how things shook out,” Adebo said of playing on the left side in New Orleans. “So definitely, I feel like I could play on both sides, and so it’s not something that I focus too much on.”

“For sure,” Adebo said. “Yeah, I’ve seen him locked in, and I’m excited for him. “I think he’s always been a very smart player. I think it’s just increased even more having this experience that he’s had, the ability to diagnose plays before they happen, knowing what concepts we can expect, knowing what situations, what kind of plays are going to get thrown at us, situational awareness.”

QB Tommy DeVito. In the offseason, The Giants completely remade the quarterback room, bringing in veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston and trading back into Round 1 to draft Jaxson Dart in April. The Giants aren’t going to carry four quarterbacks, and while New York would likely love to stash DeVito on the practice squad, there are just too many teams with atrocious backups for him to clear waivers.
4 NFL trades that should happen before the regular season | SBNation.com
Kayvon Thibodeaux to the Detroit Lions. Thibodeux is not a good fit with Brian Burns, which is why the Giants were comfortable taking Abdul Carter in the draft. Thibodeux and Burns were a bad duo against the run, and filled a similar role as speed/finesse pass rushers. Meanwhile the Lions have someone sitting on their depth chart the Giants could really use in veteran OT Dan Skipper.
New York’s offensive line is a mess. Skipper, a fan favorite, is set to be a backup this season in Detroit. There’s easily a scenario where the Giants could add Skipper and a 3rd round pick, getting much better in the process and moving on. Meanwhile the Lions get another pass rusher who could revitalize his career on the Lions and become an impact player.
