The Bengals need to go get an offensive lineman. It’s not just because what they have right now isn’t good. That much is known. It’s because the depth at a position that’s already a weakness is thin.
Heading into Monday night’s preseason matchup at the Washington Commanders, the Bengals are banged up at multiple position groups on the roster, including the offensive line.
Cody Ford, who is battling Lucas Patrick for the starting right guard spot, was on the rehab field to start practice on Saturday. In addition, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Cordell Volson sustained a shoulder injury this week and will not be available Monday night.
“I thought he was having a good camp,” Taylor said about Volson. “He was being consistent for us. He works his tail off, man. He’s one of those guys that you just appreciate, embracing whatever role you put him in. Goes out there and just works and has a tremendous attitude. Again, we’ll see how it shakes out with him.”
Given this situation, how do the Bengals not go out and sign an offensive lineman? The whole season comes down to protecting No. 9. One play, one missed block… and you know what can devastatingly happen.
Elsewhere, Geno Stone, Mike Gesicki, Jermaine Burton, and Myles Murphy will all not play Monday night.
“I think Myles is one of those guys probably in the week-ish range,” Taylor said. “We’ll see kind of where it ends up in the preseason. You want to be cautious. We’re not going to throw him out there for a preseason game, but it’s nothing long-term or significant.
DJ Turner, according to Taylor, is questionable but does not sound like he will play Monday night.
Again, right guard needs to be the priority right now. It doesn’t matter if the other four offensive linemen are good. That weakest link can derail an entire season of hopes and dreams.
