The Los Angeles Rams were victorious in their preseason opener and look to continue the trend against SoFi Stadium roomie the Los Angeles Chargers. Last season, both L.A. teams made the playoffs in the same year for the first time since 2018.
Other L.A. is aiming for sustained success under Jim Harbaugh, who is entering his second season with the team. I spoke with Jeremy Brener from Bolts From The Blue ahead of Saturday’s matchup to get his thoughts on Trey Lance (who you know I love), how the Chargers are navigating the Rashawn Slater injury and more.
Q – Journeyman quarterback Trey Lance has put together a decent preseason performance so far for the Chargers in what is likely his last best NFL opportunity. What are your thoughts on Lance, and how do you like his chances of being Justin Herbert’s backup?
A – He is competing for a backup job, but it may not be for the Chargers. Taylor Heinicke is one of the top backup quarterbacks in the league and he is currently the favorite for Los Angeles. However, there’s a good chance the Chargers could be able to swing Lance for a late pick in a trade for a team that could use a quarterback a little more.
Q – Who has been a key standout during training camp?
A – Oronde Gadsden II has been one of the top players at tight end for the Chargers. There’s a chance he could have a big role in the offense with the wide receiver corps looking a little shaky.
Q – With Rashawn Slater out for the season following a devastating injury, Jim Harbaugh said that second-year tackle Joe Alt will move to left tackle. Who else along the offensive line could fill in if Alt struggles?
A – Trey Pipkins is expected to enter the starting lineup on the right side, replacing Alt who moves to the left. Pipkins is a seven-year veteran that has spent his entire career with the Chargers, so there’s already a familiarity there.
Q – What are three things you’d like to see out of L.A. against the Rams Saturday?
A – The starters need to get some kind of rhythm. This is their big dress rehearsal, so just seeing some kind of consistency from them would be a welcome sign.
Perhaps a little more specific, Tre Harris could be someone that needs to take a step in the right direction for the Chargers. He’s struggled in camp, but a good game against the Rams could spark some momentum.
On defense, seeing some turnovers would be nice. There are playmakers all over the defense, so if they can have an impact, it would make things a lot easier for the Chargers during the season.
Q – With the Chargers entering their second year under Jim Harbaugh, what are your expectations for this team in 2025, particularly in a tough AFC West?
A – The Chargers can definitely return to the playoffs, but it’s hard to imagine them dethroning the Chiefs. The Broncos are also on the rise, so a 9-8 or 10-7 season in third place could be the forecast for the Chargers this season.
