Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …
Eagles-Browns practice takeaways: Cornerback concerns, inconsistent offense – The Athletic
Cooper DeJean is arguably the team’s second-best cornerback. The sensibility of DeJean playing cornerback is well–documented. Fangio clearly values DeJean at nickel and is pleased with DeJean’s play as a base-package safety during training camp. However, Fangio may not have the luxury to keep DeJean in a flexible role from the nickel slot. A year ago, Fangio said he eventually wanted to see DeJean play snaps at cornerback, the position Philadelphia drafted him at, and DeJean did play corner during OTAs within base packages. Christian Parker, the team’s defensive passing game coordinator, said last week that the Eagles still plan on getting DeJean snaps at outside cornerback. That move may soon be necessary. “I’m prepared. I’m sure they’ll let me know and make sure that I’m ready if that happens,” DeJean said. He hasn’t played any outside cornerback during training camp, but said his individual drills and team reps at nickel involve “the same man-to-man progressions as a corner.” Rookie Mac McWilliams would be a potential replacement at nickel. McWilliams, a fifth-round pick, saw first-team reps during team drills on Wednesday. (My main takeaway: The Eagles need to start thinking about Cooper DeJean at cornerback.)
Eagles-Browns Training Camp Practice Notes: The cornerback competition continues – BGN
Jakorian Bennett got off to a positive start by knocking down a short pass over the middle to Jeudy. He struggled after that. Bennett trailed well behind a crossing Gage Larvadain — who is an undrafted rookie — to allow a touchdown during red zone drills. He allowed a completion over the middle to Jeudy on a really nice anticipation throw from Joe Flacco. Later, Bennett got his hands on a pass but he was flagged for defensive pass interference on the play. In fairness to Bennett, he’s still learning a new defense. And some of his struggles came while playing left cornerback, which isn’t where he mostly played for the Las Vegas Raiders. But it’s probably safe to say Bennett isn’t a slam dunk starting option.
Kelee Ringo was first up with the ones at cornerback. He had some rough moments when the ball came his way. The most egregious came when Brown quarterback Joe Flacco went to wide receiver Jerry Jeudy near the sideline. Ringo was beat on the comeback route, but rather than contain the receiver, he went for the pass breakup and wasn’t close. Jeudy picked up an additional 10-15 yards after the whiff. It was just one play, and I didn’t watch the Eagles defense in the last portion, but I’m starting to wonder if Ringo can be trusted to start. His highs can be high, but the lows are low. He still has time to make a push because Adoree’ Jackson hasn’t wrestled the job from the competition. Jackson fared well in one-on-ones and broke up two Kenny Pickett passes. He was in coverage when a Flacco throw sailed wide after Jeudy lost his footing. Jackson celebrated as if he caused the slip.
It’s rare to see other NFL players as awe-struck by one of their peers as the Eagles consistently are after joint practices featuring Myles Garrett. It’s understandable, given the All-World edge rusher’s ability to dominate games and, on Wednesday, stretches of practices even when pitted against two of the best tackles in the league. Garrett got by Jordan Mailata a handful of times during the team period of practice for a series of pressures and at least one “sack.” He fared slightly worse against Lane Johnson, but did manage to beat Johnson to the inside on a rep during one-on-one drills. The pair’s second rep was more of a worlds-colliding stalemate, but it was nevertheless rare to see Johnson caught unprepared. After practice, Garrett held court with several different groups of Eagles players. That included Jalyx Hunt, who said during his press conference that he spent time this offseason studying Garrett and intended to chat with the superstar. Hunt then left the podium and beelined directly to Garrett for that conversation.
Eagles training camp bubble player power rankings – PhillyVoice
1) EDGE Azeez Ojulari: We originally had Ojulari as a “near lock,” but after a very quiet first couple weeks of camp we bumped him down into the bubble. Still, he’s likely to make the team, (a) because he was the team’s highest-paid outside acquisition, (b) the Eagles don’t have ideal depth on the edge otherwise, and (c) he has begun to show a little life.
Browns-Eagles Practice #1 – Iggles Blitz
Brett Toth got the starting reps at LG. He had an up and down day. 1-on-1’s aren’t ideal for a guy like Toth. He’s at his best when he knows the play, the snap count and his assignment. He’s better at executing a block than winning on natural ability or athleticism. Darrian Kinnard got the second team reps at LG. He also got some snaps at LT. Interesting. This may be a sign that the coaches are considering Kinnard as the backup at LG and LT and Matt Pryor as the backup on the right side. This is just speculation for now, but that would make some sense. Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens both sat for part of the practice to get some rest. That meant snaps for rookie Drew Kendall at center and Pryor at RT. Every rep Kendall gets helps him get better.
2025 NFL betting preview: Three picks for each team you need to consider – ESPN
Philadelphia Eagles: Eagles to win NFC East (-160), Jalen Hurts to win MVP (+1600), Saquon Barkley UNDER 1,400.5 rushing yards (-105). With most of the principal players back, the defending Super Bowl champs look like legit contenders again in 2025. I don’t see another team in the division — or the NFC, for that matter — in the Eagles’ class. They should repeat as NFC East champions and be a top-two seed in the conference. … Jalen Hurts is now a Super Bowl MVP and feels like a good wagering value in the regular-season MVP market. The Eagles might need to throw the ball more in 2025 if Saquon Barkley feels the effects of a 482-touch season (including playoffs), and if that’s the case, Hurts could produce some gaudy stats on one of the best teams in the league. That’s a nice recipe for an MVP résumé. It feels like Hurts odds should be a bit closer to the likes of Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow.
2025 NFL preseason, Week 2: How to watch every game, what to know for all 32 teams – NFL.com
EAGLES: Even after some talent-shedding, the roster looks to be mostly sewn up, with only a handful of jobs likely to be in play. But with Landon Dickerson’s injury clouding the picture, the offensive line reps will be hotly contested against the Browns. Also, CB Adoree’ Jackson might be on the outside looking in after the Eagles traded for Jakorian Bennett. This game could be big for Jackson and a few others battling for jobs.
Why Jalen Hurts shared a long moment with Shedeur Sanders after practice – NBCSP
Hurts said he wanted to keep the content of his conversation with Sanders “intimate” but did explain a little about that moment and his responsibility as a veteran NFL quarterback. “I’m always there,” Hurts said. “I said earlier, giving my perspective on what I see and how I have gone about things. Ultimately, it takes a great deal of patience and hard work and a sense of resilience. You’ve got to want it. You know, you’ve got to want it. And so I’m supporting him from where I am and wishing him nothing but the best with his opportunities.” Hurts is 27 now and will enter Year 6 of his career in 2025. During his NFL career, Hurts has been a two-time Pro Bowler, has taken his team to two Super Bowls and was named the MVP of Super Bowl LIX. But before all that success, as he came up in the league, Hurts always paid respect to the players he thought paved the way for him; guys like Russell Wilson. And Hurts knows he’s now that type of example for a younger generation of players. It’s a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly.
The rookie version of Jalyx Hunt didn’t particularly feel comfortable lining up for joint practices against the New England Patriots. This year with Cleveland in town? Bring it on. “Last year I was kind of nervous about practicing with other teams, because I didn’t know how I would look. But this year, I’m real thankful, just so I can try some new things and compete against different people.” Hunt grew enormously in his rookie season and then, literally, did the same in the offseason. He added muscle and is at the desired playing weight and he has been outstanding this summer. The confidence factor is high as well. Hunt is in his second season and a player the Eagles expect a lot from this season.
Dillon Gabriel in line to start Saturday if hamstring is well enough – PFT
Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel will get 11-on-11 work in Wednesday’s joint practice with the Eagles and he’ll be in line to start Saturday’s game in Philadelphia if all goes well. Gabriel has been dealing with a hamstring injury and head coach Kevin Stefanski said at a press conference that he wants to “get through today and tomorrow” before making any concrete plans for the game, but that the intent has been for the third-round pick to start at least one game this summer. “The plan was always to give both of those guys start in the preseason, so we’ll see how it shakes out,” Stefanski said.
Browns Shedeur Sanders injury update is concerning – Dawgs By Nature
Down goes QB Shedeur Sanders, joining Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel among the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition participants with injuries. Pickett and Gabriel each went down with hamstring injuries that have limited them for a number of weeks and opening the door for Sanders to excel against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1. With loads of questions about how the Browns would distribute reps during joint practices against the Philadelphia Eagles, many wondered why Sanders was not in the rotation on Wednesday morning. Joe Flacco and Gabriel getting the first two chances made sense, but seeing Tyler Huntley on the field instead of Sanders raised a lot of red flags until news broke that the young fifth round pick was injured before team drills began.
Will Washington sink or swim if Terry McLaurin misses real games? – Hogs Haven
On the latest Trap or Dive Podcast, Lynnell Willingham of 106.7 The Fan joined the show to break down the Commanders’ training camp to date and what the first quarter of Washington’s season would look like if Terry McLaurin remained on the PUP list. McLaurin does have the ability to get paid his base salary if he starts the season there, so long as he returns by the sixth game of the season. Willingham believes that, given what he has seen in practices, Washington does not have the horsepower offensively to overcome McLaurin’s absence if he misses the first six games of the season. The concern becomes who can step up at the wide receiver position to help Deebo Samuel, especially if Noah Brown is still navigating his knee injury at the start of the season.
Jerry Jones on what the hold up is with Micah Parsons: ‘Nothing’ – Blogging The Boys
So why not negotiate then? Why not take care of the situation so that the best player on your team can be a part of the training, practicing with the rest of his teammates? These seem like fair questions.
Giants-Jets joint practice, Day 2: Offense has a better day – Big Blue View
Tuesday’s joint practice against the New York Jets was not a great one for the New York Giants’ offense. Wednesday was not dominant by any stretch of the imagination, but the Giants did have some success. The offense continued to be without wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo, but wide receiver Jalin Hyatt and guard Evan Neal returned to practice.
NFL QB check-in: Shedeur Sanders, Trey Lance shining so far in preseason – SB Nation
How worried are you about the Matthew Stafford situation? RJ: The Rams are acting very strange about this Stafford situation in my opinion. Is he healthy? Is he going to play? Is he going to practice? These feel like fair questions. More than anything, it feels fair for Sean McVay to have to answer them. I have always found it amazing, and Michael will agree, that the Rams kind of dodge any spotlight on intense and important matters. Remember a few years ago when there were reports that Cam Akers was never going to play for the team because a relationship had been damaged? And then a few weeks later how he was totally fine playing for the team? The Rams play in a MASSIVE media market and for some reason are pretty invisible in this sense. I mean, their literal franchise quarterback who won a Super Bowl for them is sort of an ongoing question mark and people are just shrugging their shoulders. How is this possible?!
