Eagles News: Peyton Manning impressed by Jalen Hurts’ “appreciation of the cerebral part of the game”

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Peyton Manning is continually impressed by Jalen Hurts – PhillyVoice

“I mean, it tells you all about his mental toughness, right? Because that’s the kind of situation where it’s embarrassing and you just don’t sort of recover from it mentally or emotionally. So it tells you how mentally tough he is, and they said he was the first guy to high-five [Tua Tagovailoa] in the locker room and was as celebratory after that win as all the players that were involved in the game…I mean, he’s played so well in both those Super Bowls, but I like the way he goes about it. He calls me a lot, and asks me lots of questions. They (Eagles) actually run a lot of plays that we (Manning’s Colts) used to run, Sirianni to Frank Reich to Tom Moore, sort of that chain, and he calls me with very specific questions about certain plays. So he’s a student of the game.” [PFF] Manning went on to acknowledge the typical praise given to Hurts, from the 600-pound squat, to his ability to power through tacklers on the run, and to how well he can throw it downfield. But for Manning, neither of those attributes are what truly make his game special. “His appreciation of the cerebral part of the game is what’s impressive to me, and how he’s taken his game to the next level,” Manning said. “I think the sky’s the limit for this guy.”

Eagles Training Camp Practice Notes: The Landon Dickerson backup plan – BGN

JALEN HURTS UPDATE: Hurts was razor sharp. The reigning Super Bowl MVP only attempted eight passes in today’s practice but he completed all eight of them. Hurts had multiple connections with DeVonta Smith, who was flat out unguardable. Two of Hurts’ completions to Smith were anticipation throws over the middle with the wide receiver working out of the slot. Hurts also hit a toe-tapping Jahan Dotson in a tight window along the right sideline. To me, his most impressive completion came when he rolled right and fired a bullet across his body to Dallas Goedert with Quinyon Mitchell in tight coverage. Maybe Hurts is sick of all the QB ranking disrespect. Will be interesting to see if he can stay hot against old friend Jim Schwartz’s defense over the next two days.

Options – Iggles Blitz

Vic Fangio seems to want Andrew Mukuba to be a starter. He’s spoken highly of him since the Eagles selected Mukuba in the second round. Injuries are the only thing to keep Mukuba out of the lineup. Sydney Brown had a good showing in the game last week and he’s been solid this summer. Either one of them could start at safety. Both Brown and Mukuba will be doing everything they can to win the job. They’ll have joint practices with the Browns and then the game on Saturday. Fangio will want to see as much of them as possible.

Win-loss record ceilings, floors for all NFL teams in 2025 – ESPN

Philadelphia Eagles. Ceiling: 13-4 | Floor: 8-9. Biggest X factor: Running back Saquon Barkley. What can Barkley do for an encore? The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year became the ninth player to rush for 2,000-plus yards during the regular season, fueling Philadelphia’s Super Bowl charge. None of the previous eight players to reach 2,000 yards was able to accomplish the feat the following season — all finished with 1,500 yards or less the next year. The Eagles can’t afford too sharp of a drop-off. “It’s so hard to do it twice,” Barkley said, “because it’s hard to do it the first time.”

Five things we’ll be watching in the Eagles’ two joint practices with the Cleveland Browns – Inquirer

At cornerback, Adoree’ Jackson again got the first look at outside corner on Tuesday, though Kelee Ringo mixed in with the ones as well. The Eagles recently inserted Jakorian Bennett into the race, but after getting some reps with the ones on Sunday, Bennett was with the twos on Tuesday. The top Cleveland target figures to be Jerry Jeudy, who likely will see a lot of Quinyon Mitchell. There’s also the edge rushers. Beyond Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt, the Eagles aren’t really sure what they have. And while the other real contenders for snaps — Joshua Uche, Azeez Ojulari, Ogbo Okoronkwo, and Patrick Johnson — got some run in the preseason opener, can they separate themselves with some extended action against players not named Mailata and Lane Johnson? We’ll see.

How seven years of persistence could earn Eagles vet Brett Toth a starting spot – NBCSP

Here’s how long Brett Toth has been an Eagle: He was teammates with Alshon Jeffery, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Orlando Scandrick. Some of the coaches who were here when he arrived were Mike Groh, Carson Walch and Matt Burke. Others in his rookie class were Nate Herbig, T.J. Edwards and Miles Sanders. Toth is one of the weirdest stories in recent Eagles history. He never plays. But he never leaves. Only 15 offensive linemen in Eagles history have been here longer than Toth, including all-timers like Tra Thomas, Lane Johnson, Jason Peters, Jon Runyan and Jason Kelce. Yet he’s only played more than one offensive snap in three games in his life that weren’t blowouts or meaningless. He’s been released eight times, had brief dalliances with the Cards and Panthers and hasn’t gotten on the field in an Eagles uniform since the end of the 2021 season. Toth is one of only six players currently on the roster who played under Doug Pederson (along with Lane Johnson, Jake Elliott, Dallas Goedert, Jordan Mailata, Jalen Hurts and Matt Pryor).

Eagles Training Camp Updates: Nick Sirianni sees joint practices as a way to ‘change it up’ – PE.com

“Joint practices are a good way to change it up, but we get a lot of good work when we’re out there by ourselves also,” Sirianni said. “… (It’s a) big area to be able to evaluate your team against another team and evaluate your players against another team when you do joint practices.” In the hot summer days, there has been a history of joint practices around the NFL getting a bit too physical and fights breaking out. Sirianni said that’s not something he expects against the Browns, and he’s looking forward to getting in good reps against Cleveland. “Our expectation is to go out there and get good work at practice,” Sirianni said. “Not to say that there’s not things here and there, but our expectation is to go get good work at practice and you can’t do that when you’re fighting. We work at that together, and I’m always appreciative of Kevin (Stefanski, Browns head coach) and his staff with the Browns to be able to do that and that’s why we can continue to practice against the Browns.”

Two former Eagles have allowed Andy Reid’s coaching tree to grow in an unexpected way – NJ.com

Now, both in retirement from the game they played with such astonishing speed and grace, Vick and Jackson are surprising us again. The two former Eagles teammates that formed an explosive connection in 2010 sat next to each other Tuesday as first-year college head football coaches promoting an Oct. 30 game between their respective teams at Lincoln Financial Field. Vick, 45, left his job as a FOX analyst to take over Norfolk State and Jackson, 38, accepted a job at Delaware State. The two men want to turn around struggling programs, but they also plan to positively influence the lives of the young men they coach at the two HBCU schools.

Brian Schottenheimer: Tyler Guyton taking part in walkthroughs, still no timeframe on recovery – Blogging The Boys

Ahead of the team’s practice, head coach Brian Schottenheimer took the podium and addressed a variety of things. Among the matters that Schotty touched on was the subject of second-year tackle Tyler Guyton. You may not remember all the details since it was a few weeks ago, but Guyton suffered a bone fracture (after an ACL scare) that was set to sideline him 4-6 weeks. It has been about two weeks since the injury occurred, so hearing from Schotty that Guyton is involved in walkthroughs is a piece of good news. At this point it is hard to tell whether or not Guyton will be available for the season opener against Philadelphia, the Eagles have some injury news along the offensive line as well, but ultimately it is hard to not feel pretty pumped about this.

Cowboys corner DaRon Bland hoping for a new contract before Week 1 – NFL.com

Micah Parsons isn’t the only Dallas Cowboys player looking for a new contract before Week 1. Corner DaRon Bland said that his reps and the Cowboys have had “some talks” about an extension. He hopes it could be done before the 2025 season opener. “I do, but I’m not here to talk about it really too much,” Bland said via the team’s official website. “But yea, hopefully.”

Giants’ offense has rough day in first joint practice vs. Jets – Big Blue View

The Giants’ offense looked flat out bad in their two 11-on-11 periods prior to the red zone drill that concluded practice. The first Giants’ offensive period started on their own 20-yard line. Wilson completed one pass with the first team — a play-action rollout to Collins in the flat. The Giants offensive line struggled to hold up. The first play was a holding penalty, the second a sack (Tufele) surrendered by Greg Van Roten, who was bull-rushed into the ground; the third play was a pass batted at the line of scrimmage, and the fourth was a Will McDonald IV sack, who cleanly beat Eluemunor.

Jason Licht would have taken Devin White off the board, if he knew then what he knows now – PFT

Earlier this year, Buccaneers G.M. Jason Licht said that he shies away from “d-bags and assholes” when it’s time to draft players. While Licht expressly applied neither category to former Buccaneers linebacker Devin White, something would have kept Licht from taking White, if Licht had a chance to do it all over again. “Knowing what I know now, he would have been off my board,” Licht told Dan Pompei of TheAthletic.com. “It was too much about him.”

A new way to pay for sports is a game-changer for fans – SB Nation

Being a sports fan in 2025 is an absolute mess. It’s impossible to keep track of who has the rights to each specific game, meaning that more often than not you’re left searching for the game, checking the streaming options, then realizing it’s on the one service you’re not paying for. Now there’s a new option for sports fans which could really change the game ahead of college football season. Sling TV announced new tiered pricing on Tuesday, designed to give viewers access to sports for a temporary period of time. While it’s a more expensive option for every-week viewers, it does provide access to sports for short time periods making it much cheaper overall if there are only a few rivalry games you really care about each year, or have specific weeks circled on your calendar.
