On December 22nd, 2019, the Los Angeles Rams needed to beat the San Francisco 49ers to stay alive, and they needed to win-out to make the postseason, but instead on the final drive of the game, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo converted two (TWO!) third and 16’s to lead SF to a game winning field goal by Robbie Gould to officially end the Rams chances at making the playoffs.
For Rams fans, it was heartbreaking, for 49ers fans, they can look back on that game with glee.
Now, I already know some will say Garoppolo didn’t win that game, it was the defense, it was the play calling, it was the horrific pick-6 thrown by Jared Goff before halftime, but come on now, let’s give Jimmy G his flowers, he was good enough in this one, and he was darn good when he delivered on those two (TWO!) third and longs when all the Rams needed was a stop.
The NFL is an elite club and a small world, so it’s not all that uncommon to see adversaries one year become teammates the next, and that’s what has happened with Garoppolo.
We’ll see if we get any headlines this year involving Garoppolo as a savior for L.A., and it would be funny if he were named a hero this season considering that he was a main reason the Rams went home early in 2019.
Going into 2025, Jimmy G. might be the Rams only hope to keep their season alive if Matthew Stafford misses any time.
Oh, how things change.
