The New York Giants moved quickly to release veteran linebacker Ty Summers from injured reserve with an injury settlement, doing so just days after replacing Summers on the 90-man roster with linebacker K.J. Cloyd.
Summers, a six-year veteran, has been a reserve linebacker and special teams player throughout his career. Summers played in 16 games with two starts for the Giants last season, registering 29 tackles.
Summers apparently had a groin injury.
An injury settlement generally consists of a team paying a player’s salary for however many weeks the player is expected to be sidelined. That amount counts against the salary cap. After that period of time, the player is free to sign with any team.
Summers was a seventh-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2019. He has played for the Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints and Giants.
A special teams player first, Summers has just three starts on defense in 83 games.
