3) Lane Johnson’s second Super Bowl triumph came amid a season in which he and the rest of the Eagles’ stellar offensive line cleared alleys for Saquon Barkley to run for over 2,000 yards, a memorable journey that won’t be forgotten in Philadelphia any time soon. Since Jason Kelce retired after the 2023 season, Johnson has replaced him as the elder statesman and leader of the elite group, which has remained highly effective even as faces have changed. If the Eagles author another successful campaign and Barkley rushes for 1,300-plus yards, expect Johnson to be among the finalists. Like Williams, he’s already headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 4) The other standout tackle on Philadelphia’s line, Jordan Mailata has already achieved enough in his football career to consider it a great success, having transitioned from rugby to become one of the NFL’s top tackles. The former seventh-round pick reached a new peak in 2024, earning the top OL grade in the NFL, per PFF, and at 28 years old, he’s squarely in his prime. Like Williams, Mailata has earned his own internet fame for cackling after pancaking opponents and clearing room for Barkley, and his Australian accent — plus his awesome singing voice — have made him one of the most likeable players in the league. He’s a mobile mountain who revels in destroying opponents and is one of the very best at doing so, making him an easy choice for consideration.

POSITION BATTLE UPDATE — LINEBACKER: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. isn’t going down without a fight. The second-year defender broke up a Hurts pass for the second day in a row. This time it was him having tight coverage from a trailing position on Goedert in the end zone. Trot Jr. is regularly in good position to defend the run. At the same time, Jihaad Campbell is pushing for playing time. The rookie first-round pick saw more first-team reps due to Baun not practicing. He had some good moments against the run and blew up a short throw to Dallas Goedert. Campbell thudded the tight end to the ground and then helped him up since the starters aren’t supposed to actually live tackle each other in practice.

Philadelphia Eagles: DT Moro Ojomo: Last year, LB Zack Baun became a star in the Eagles’ defense as they rampaged to the Super Bowl. This year, I’m going with Ojomo, who steps into a hole left by guys who went away on big deals. DT Milton Williams is in New England now, and in his place steps Ojomo, who had some really nice (albeit limited) moments as a pass rusher. His 10.9% Pressure Rate was ninth among all DTs (min. 20 pressures) and he showed that he can step right into Williams’ role on third downs as a pass rush specialist when the Eagles rotate their second line in. Now, with an expanded role, Ojomo’s pass rush reps should go up, and I’m curious to see if his productivity improves as well.

STOCK UP: WR Elijah Cooks: Cooks has had like five highlight reel plays in the last three practices. He’s 6’4, 215, and he has a physical play style, bullying smaller corners and winning contested catch opportunities. In the 15 previous training camps I’ve covered, I’m seen my share of wide receivers start out hot, and then fade into August. So, we’ll see if Cooks can keep up his high level play. Tyler Steen hasn’t stood out in camp so far. Tuesday was the first day wearing the pads and that seemed to make a difference for Steen. Young players have to learn. They need to adjust. You want to hear that Steen is taking coaching and then working on those points. That’s how he’ll show real improvement on the field and have a chance to be the starting RG. Now that the pads are on and there is more contact you can expect some other young OL to start playing better. Most young OL are better run blockers so the first week is tough on them since there are so many passing plays. In order for the Eagles to sustain success they need young players to continue developing and playing well. It is really encouraging to see so many young guys doing just that.
Kenyon Green: Green’s inclusion in “stock down” mostly comes down to him not factoring into the position battle for the starting right guard spot on the Eagles line, partially because of injury. A former first-round pick, Green joined the Eagles in an offseason trade with the Texans. He started training camp sidelined with a knee injury but has since slotted back into the lineup as the second-team left guard. There’s still every chance Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland can help Green turn his career around. But any hope for Green following in Mekhi Becton’s footsteps from last season to win a starting job seems far-fetched at this point.
Vic Fangio offers Adoree’ Jackson a chance, but holds back on adoration – PHLY
Maybe that’s a bit strong. But when asked about Jackson during a Tuesday press conference, the Eagles’ defensive coordinator was blunt about what he needs to see, and what Jackson hasn’t shown in those eight NFL seasons. Fangio noted that in the first few camp practices, the ball didn’t go Jackson’s way, but that Monday, “he had a couple of balls thrown his way and he did very well. He had a very good day yesterday.” Before any of the assembled scribes could take that compliment and run with it, Fangio added that “I think this is the place where he’s got to show who he is and be the player, hopefully, that people have always thought he could be.” Then Fangio acknowledged that signing Jackson was general manager Howie Roseman’s idea, not his, “so we just took him in.” Reporters still seemed to be looking for the typical training camp story, where the coach shines up a guy who has a shot at winning a job. But Fangio, bless him, is not in the business of gilding lilies.

Vic Fangio doesn’t blow smoke. So if the Eagles’ defensive coordinator hands out even faint praise about a Day 3 rookie, it’s worth noting. That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday when Fangio was asked about fifth-round corner Mac McWilliams. “Mac’s got some good football instincts,” Fangio said before the fifth training camp practice of 2025. “He’s got to learn the finer points of what we’re doing all the time. He’s a little hit and miss with that right now, but that’s to be expected. “But I do like the player. I think he’s got good skill and he’s got a little football savvy to him, which if you don’t have that, it’s hard to coach that.”

A view of Q from the other side: Second-year cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has been outstanding this summer, as anyone who has watched practice can attest, but it’s always good to get a view from the quarterback trying to complete passes on No. 27. Jalen Hurts is very, very impressed with what he has seen from Mitchell. “He’s come in and he’s having a really good start to his camp, playing with great confidence, and that is something you can see. I’m always, I’m his biggest fan,” Hurts said, “because on the other side of the ball when you see guys just taking those strides and growing and competing and knowing that they’re going against the best of the best every day, I know he’s continuing to take those steps every day.”

Two first-round picks: DT Jalen Carter, QB Jalen Hurts. Go back and watch the final two snaps of the Rams’ 2024 season if you have any questions about Carter. He doesn’t have spectacular numbers, racking up 10.5 sacks and 25 knockdowns over his first two seasons, but the tape shows a player who consistently pushes the pocket and presents an incredibly difficult matchup for interior offensive linemen. He’s on the verge of a 10-sack season, which might come as early as 2025. Are there teams that wouldn’t be willing to mold their offense to fit Hurts’ style of play? I suppose. It’s their loss. In Jeremy Fowler’s recent story polling league execs, Hurts was valued as the league’s ninth-best quarterback, which reflects reality: There are some in the league who never believed in him as a viable starter and some who see his style of play and injury concerns as worrisome over the long term. There are others who note the slowdowns the Eagles have had in the passing game in the second half of the 2023 and 2024 seasons and wonder what Hurts would do without a great offensive line and the threat of the run game. At the same time, Hurts is propelling the run game forward, both with his actual running and his gravity as a potential threat to keep the football. He has dropped his interception rate below 1.5% in two of the past three seasons, and while he does take too many sacks, that’s his only statistical weakness as a passer. He has also been lights-out in the postseason, arguably outplaying Patrick Mahomes in each of their two Super Bowl matchups. There’s a wider range of opinions on Hurts than other star quarterbacks, but he’s a 26-year-old with a meaningful MVP push and two Super Bowl appearances in the past three seasons.

From the football field to fighting crime, former NFL player and local gym owner Brandon Hughes was approved on Monday as the newest police officer for Falls Township. The Falls Township Board of Supervisors approved Hughes’ hiring following a recommendation from Chief of Police Nelson Whitney. Hughes, a graduate of Oregon State University, was drafted by the San Diego Chargers as the 149th pick in the 2009 NFL draft. He played five seasons in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and spent three years with the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the Commanders’ top receiver, Terry McLaurin, missing time due to an ongoing contract dispute, his absence provides the rest of the position group with ample opportunity to establish a strong connection with the starting offense and quarterback Jayden Daniels. In turn, it makes all the sense in the world that new Commanders receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. has lit training camp up, according to various reporters covering practices daily. Commanders reporter Ben Standig, formerly of The Athletic, mentioned that Samuel has made at least two splash plays in each practice session. Samuel understands that this is a significant season in his career, but he is not allowing pressure to affect his day-to-day mindset.

It is difficult to believe that things could have gone sideways or backwards if we are looking at them through the lens of logic. This whole thing seems straightforward. More than that, it is basically on record that the Cowboys are willing to make Parsons the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
The Jameis Winston trade speculation just won’t die – Big Blue View
Some teams around the NFL could use Jameis Winston’s skill set, and the former Heisman Trophy winner could even push for starting reps at certain places. However, I like the idea of having a strong quarterback room that will not crumble if the starter suffers an injury. I also like the idea of surrounding Jaxson Dart with competent and experienced leaders. I won’t be advocating for a trade unless there’s an obvious return that can’t be refuted. Winston has a valuable presence that’s independent of the starter’s health. He has an infectious personality and comports himself well with his teammates. I would rather have Winston on the team in case of an emergency than trade him for a sixth-round pick. Other notable players on the list are Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin, Cincinnati edge Trey Hendrickson, and Dallas edge Micah Parsons.
