NFL training camp roundup: Highlights and storylines from July 24

- Justin Fields seems to avoid major injury at Jets camp: Fields was in obvious discomfort after throwing a pass in team drills. He limped to the sideline before taking the medical cart to the locker room and is now listed as “day to day.”
- Kyle Pitts is reportedly working with the Falcons’ wide receivers: A transition to wide receiver would make sense for Pitts, who has never earned a PFF run-blocking grade higher than 55.6 and has lined up in the slot 47.2% of the time on pass snaps for his career.

Jets quarterback Justin Fields carted off during Thursday’s practice
New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field with a toe injury during Thursday’s practice, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes.
Fields was in obvious discomfort after throwing a pass in team drills. He was able to limp to the sideline before taking the medical cart to the locker room. The cart is often used as a precaution for injuries during camp, and Fields is now listed as “day to day” with a dislocated toe.
Fields is in the first of a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets. He spent last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers after three up-and-down years with the Chicago Bears. He took better care of the ball than in previous years, registering a career-low 2.8% turnover-worthy play percentage.
Tyrod Taylor will step in and take the majority of the first-team reps if Fields is sidelined for any length of time.
Kyle Pitts working with Falcons‘ wide receivers so far in practice
The Atlanta Falcons‘ Kyle Pitts has been working with wide receivers in practice, not the tight ends, according to team staff writer Will McFadden.
A transition to wide receiver would make sense for Pitts, who has never earned a PFF run-blocking grade higher than 55.6 and has lined up in the slot 47.2% of the time on pass snaps for his career.
The former No. 4 overall pick out of Florida had an excellent rookie season (80.3 PFF overall grade, fifth among 70 qualifying tight ends) but has seen his PFF grade steadily decline in each season since, all the way down to 59.6 in 2024. Still just 24 years old, Pitts will look to bounce back in a big way this season prior to hitting free agency as an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold leaves practice with a strained calf
Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold left practice Thursday with a strained calf, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
It may be some time before Arnold is back on the field, with the Lions likely to take a cautious approach in the first week of camp. Detroit has already been hit with some injuries the past few days, most notably losing defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike for the year to a torn ACL.
Arnold was the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and played more than 1,000 snaps as a rookie. He struggled in his transition to the NFL, allowing 60 receptions (98 targets) for 792 yards and four touchdowns in coverage.
Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III “day-to-day” with lingering hamstring injury
Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III is “day-to-day” after suffering a hamstring injury on May 20, according to head coach Ben Johnson.
The day-to-day status is encouraging, but there is some concern, given the injury occurred more than two months ago and hamstrings have a history of lingering into the season. For now, Bears fans just have to hope Burden will return to the field sooner rather than later.
Burden was selected 39th overall in this year’s draft out of Missouri. He was one of the most talented receivers in the 2025 draft class, as evidenced by a career 89.0 PFF receiving grade. When healthy, he will join a crowded but talented pass-catching room alongside D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland.
